Australia woman named her son after methamphetamine

A journalist in Australia named her newborn son ''Methamphetamine Rules''. She was sure the name would be rejected by the registry department they have. The mother said she and her husband tried to think up the most offensive name they could, as they knew it would be rejected by the registrar. That backfired. The baby's birth certificate arrived in the mail, and that was indeed his name. The parents were shocked. The registrar said it was a big oversight. The parents will have a different name for their new son. Joke or not, who in their right mind would do this?

I guess they really like getting attention, which shouldn’t surprise me since she is a journalist. The poor kid will hear about his parent’s joke for the rest of his life. As an adult, he probably won’t care, but as a teen he’s going to resent the careless joke.

He certainly will. The fact that the name will follow him around was the first thing I thought of. His parents never, ever should have done anything like that.

I would really understand the reason to do something so stupid. If they did not want that name why to suggest it?

@MarieCoyle I think you are right, they wanted notoriety.

@MarieCoyle - I fully agree with you, not even for a plank a parent should do this to a child.

@LadyDuck For someone to do that to a baby, in my opinion they need some counseling. That's just cruel.

The only thing it really solved was if anyone was ever in doubt of her being an idiot, now they know she really is one.

I am sure their child will hate them, as he knows what his name is. This is so ridiculous.

@Shavkat Supposedly, they already did. But since this was news and his mother is a news lady fairly well known in her area, people will no doubt remember what she did, the poor kid will never live it down.

It is truly ridiculous. It will make him feel like he was a joke, and they just didn't care.

I thought it was just plain mean, too. The things people do to garner attention never cease to amaze me.

@MarieCoyle Or at least not until they have applied for and been granted a licence by sane people such as me. Getting pregnant is far too easy.

@xFiacre It certainly is. After all these years, the things people often do for attention never cease to amaze me.

I've said it many times--some people should never procreate. Ever.

I don't know as I believe her, saying she didn't think it would go through the registrar. I think she may have just done it for attention to herself.

"We think it'll be a very unique 21st birthday present to tell him this story." I hate to break it to her, but this isn't 1972. As soon as the kid hits school he's finding out. Does a birth not have to be registered in person in Australia? In the UK it's a visit to the Register office or via the hospital. We don't have many actually banned names in the UK but the Registra can refuse names that are offensive, impossible to pronounce or contain numerals.
