Despite negative changes in habitat and continued poaching, the African rhino population has grown to approximately 27,000. This is a far cry from the 500,000 reported in the 20th century. The Javan and Sumatran rhino are still close to extinction.
In a first for the state of Wisconsin, 5 American flamingos drew crowds when they appeared on the shore of Lake Michigan about 25 miles north of Milwaukee. There have also been sightings in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

@LindaOHio Chicken cordon bleu is good. We had chicken nuggets for dinner, I quickly made a tartar sauce and some oven roasted potatoes.

I wonder if the flamingoes will realize they lost their bearings and try to return to points farther south. I would expect that the ones in the northernmost areas would for sure, as they probably wouldn't survive winter.
I remember reading somewhere in the past year or so that researchers had discovered a new local population of flamingoes living in Florida, something they hadn't seen in decades. I know we have small populations of flamingoes in Florida, but I would think that they would be everywhere here.

@LindaOHio I’m sure that was the case. I wonder if they instinctively know to eventually move back down south?

@moffittjc I'm sure they do. If not, they will freeze their little a**es off in a couple of months.

They said that they thought the flamingos were driven up here by Idalia. They are so beautiful!
