A new sport for you perhaps

To each his own, I guess but I can’t imagine competing before thousands in a hobby-horse competition. The 10th Finnish Hobby Horse Championships were held in Seinäjoki, Finland back in June. Over 1,500 competitors from all over the world came together to take part in dressage, show-jumping, high-jumping ,and western riding classes. If you click on the link, it seems to be mostly young girls prancing round in the dressage ring doing their imitations of piaffe and pirouette, extended trot, etc. The article says and I quote ‘… it is a celebration of passion, creativity and the joy that hobby horses bring to people’s lives.’ End of quote At least there would be no feed bills, veterinary visits or stables to clean out. @judyev I note that on the website there is an emphasis on opportunity to buy things at the championships. Marketing is at the bottom of most things. But really, Hobby Horsing?

@JudyEv My friend is president of the Robin Appreciation Society and takes it very seriously. They go on walks to count robins and talk about them. What they find to say eludes me beyond “Oh there goes another one”. I also know a lot of people in the Pigeon Club which at least has a bar.

I know, I know - as Mrs Fawlty would say. It's a bit like the king's new clothes. No-one is game enough to say how ridiculous it all is.

@JudyEv I did vote for him because he is a much better leader than the deranged Biden currently in office.

Isn't it just? Did you see them all prancing around? No wonder people vote for Trump if they'll in their thousands to watch this. (No disrespect - I'm just assuming that you didn't vote for him.)

Well, learned something new again. I didn't know that the horse heads on a stick were called hobby horses. Weird competition

I'm a bit surprised you didn't know about hobby horses. It's certainly a weird competition.

My parents never got us anything like that mostly we'd get either dolls or stuffed animals.

@rebelann I used a piece of bamboo as my hobby horse.

I heard about this. Pretty silly. But I bet the locals are in on the joke.

@JudyEv Well, as a person who comes from a country with hot dog eating contests and tractor pulls, I'm not one to talk.

@TheHorse Tractor pulls I could accept but all the eating contests seem pretty gross.

Can you think of a few other words? I wonder if they have trouble saddling their 'horses' or whatever. It's just seems so silly.

My grandson had a hobby horse. He loved riding it until he was about five years old.

I saw the date for this competition was in June 2023. Sp it has already taken place. This is a unique and interesting concept. I hope that the spectators enjoyed it a lot.

Ok . I see how kids like hobby horses, but such a competition takes hobby horsing to a new level . I wonder if it will one day become an Olympic event !

@much2say It seems there is a great variety when it comes to colour! A gold medal would look good on a nice rich bay, or maybe a black. Actually, gold medals probably look good on most colours.

Floored indeed but competitors come from other countries too. I guess it's cheaper than a real horse.
