Have You Ever Ridden on a Train?

The train's history goes back to 2,200 BCE when wagonways were introduced. Wagonways were wheeled wagons that ran on stone "wagonways". In the 1500s wagonways were used to haul material from mines. In the 1790s iron rails were introduced. In 1804 the first steam locomotive powered the first steam train. In 1825 the Stockton and Darlington Railway in Great Britain was established which carried over 400 passengers 25 miles at 8 miles per hour. The "Railway Mania" reached the United States and the first steam railroad opened in 1829. Germany was responsible for the first electric train in 1879 and the first diesel engine in the 1890s. Diesel power was proven to be superior to steam due to lower costs, easier maintenance and better reliability. The 1960s brought high-speed rail to Japan with speeds up to and exceeding 150 miles per hour. The first high-speed train in the U. S. was Amtrack's Acela in 2000. Today's rail shipments and passenger trains require 12x less energy and emit 7-11x less greenhouse gasses than private vehicles and airplanes. We didn't have a car in the family until I was about 18 years old. All of our travel was done by train and bus. I remember train travel very well. When you would round a curve, you would get the soot from the coal-burning engine in your eyes through the open windows. That I remember, we traveled to Detroit, New York City, Niagara Falls, the local Geauga County Fair and Virginia Beach by train. Have you ever traveled by train? Where did you go? What kind of train was it? Photo Credit: Pixabay

I have traveled many times by train, but only one time on a train that used coal, all those I used to ride were electric trains. I do not remember my longest trip on a train, may be from Milan to Cannes (France).

@LindaOHio All trains are electric here and they already were electric in the 60s when we often used to ride a train.

@LindaOHio — unfortunately, all we have is Amtrak. I can roller skate on rails better. And faster.

I have traveled by train ever since I was very young (I remember my first long train ride in my country in a trail powered by coal). I traveled in the US several times and also in Europe. The last time I rode on a train was on a very fast one in Spain. Awesome!

You had an exciting childhood with all the traveling! I was on a train twice...once when I was going to Arkansas to visit my inlaws on my way back to Hawaii. The second time was just a few years ago to babysit our grandson Landon while his parents took an anniversary trip. That seven hour train ride wasn't bad, but I believe we passed 4,000 little cross roads and that train blew that whistle every single time. Of course it had to, but no napping for sure.

Yes, I have ridden on a train, but not very recently. I was going to a concert with a friend. It was an electric train.

I often take trains, and now most of them are powered by electricity. In the past, they were powered by fuel

Trains are one of my favourite things. My youngest was always quite obsessed with them as well. I don't remember travelling often on trains when I was a child, although I'm sure we must have done occasionally. I have been on stinky steamies, dirty diesels, and electric trains as well as miniature guage railways. There are lots of places I've been on them. My last train journey was to Warwick, which involves one change and takes about an hour. Last time I was on a different sort of train purely for enjoyment, I actually can't remember. It might have been the Severn Valley Railway steam train. I'd love to visit heritage railways more often. Perhaps ironically, they're all quite difficult to get to without a car! There's a steam train trip that will be coming through a couple of main local stations. It includes a meal and a scenic journey. It looked good until I saw it was around £400 per person!

That's quite expensive. I don't think I've ridden on any electric or diesel trains....all steam. Have a good weekend.

I never rode them and I remember they used firewood but that was only for a short time. It's been a long time since I've taken a train.

I have travelled by train many times. I remember in grade 3 we took a class trip to Story Book Gardens, here in the city that I live in, and we took the train as it was about an hour's car ride. Yesterday we took a tourist train ride, on a closed line to a pumpkin patch with our grandchildren. We all loved it.

@lindaohio Oh now you’ve got me started. I just love trains and the only thing better than a train journey is a very long sea voyage (not a cruise). I’ve done a number of long distance train journeys - Delhi to Kolkata (when it was called Calcutta) Delhi to Mumbai (when it was called Bombay) 36 hours each. Also Malawi to Mozambique and all over France, Italy. Next month I’ll go by train from Edinburgh to Manchester by train - 4 hours. I do love trains.

I rode in a train up to Pike’s Peak, and then on a train in the Ozarks in Missouri a couple of times. My friend just got back from a train trip from Kansas to San Francisco and back. She had such a great time. It was her reward to herself for getting her second Masters degree.

I've ridden to visit friends in Canada on Amtrack in my younger days and preferred going that way instead of flying, Mom and I visited relatives in Michigan also by Amtrak, I also enjoyed bus rides from NYC to the Catskills and to Atlantic City in New Jersey. And one time riding a train in Latvia the real Orient Express pulled up next to us on the other tracks,
