Hooray for warmer temperatures! It’s supposed to be in the 70s all week here. I think I’ll be walking outside instead of in the gym. (And yes, I’ve recovered from that over-walk on Saturday.) I also think I’ll give you another song that has “ain’t” in the title. And will you look who’s showing up in one of my countdowns….
#9: Breaking Hearts (Ain’t What It Used to Be) - Elton John
Paybacks are a female dog, as they say. That’s what this beautiful ballad is about. Man plays the “love ‘em and leave ‘em” game (“can’t say I blame them all for being hurt, after all I treated each and every one like dirt”) and it comes back to bite him like an angry bear (“and now I know what lonely means”).
In addition to that, I have to say that Elton’s voice in the chorus, on the “it’s not the night” and “it’s not the light” line is simply amazing.
This is my favorite EJ album of the 80s.

@porwest — the big hit was “Sad Songs (Say So Much).”

@FourWalls I'll check it out. Are there any songs on it that I'd know?

Gord later repented of writing that line, but was happy that people like Waylon had no problem singing it.

@FourWalls Why? It's a silly song! Poking fun at "playboys." Or that's how I read it.

I ended up playing this a few times yesterday. Elton’s voice in the chorus is magical to me.
