The plumber has been!

Our new washing machine.

The plumber has been and our new washing machine has been connected! (See picture.) He came at about 10:00am. He also had trouble turning off the stopcock and had to get a tool out of his van to do it. Then he moved the dishwasher off the washing machine and disconnected the old washing machine and put it on the drive. He was doing it on his own, he was only a young slim chap, and he'd done his back in last week too! Then he had trouble getting the new washing machine in. Eventually he managed by putting the washing machine on it's side. When he got it in he connected it and then put the tumble dryer back on top. Then he turned the stopcock back on. But then he said, when they brought the washing machine, did they try and turn the stopcock off? And my Mum said, yes, but they couldn't do it! And the plumber (who's name is Luke Smith), said, Yeah, well they've tried to force it and now it's leaking a bit. You really need a new stopcock! And my Mum said, Oh, could you do that? And he said, yes, but I'd have to get the right tools and parts because I haven't got those with me at the moment. So we arranged for him to come back at 1:00pm to fit us a new stopcock! In the meantime, my Mum payed him for connecting the new washing machine. £140. She also gave him a £10 tip. He said you don't have to do that, and he was trying to give it her back but she was insisting. Then she asked him how much the stopcock would cost, and he said the same, £140 or £120 because of this indicating the tip. But my Mum said, no! That's a tip! The plumber asked us to take everything off the top shelf in the cupboard so that he could remove it to get to the stopcock better. So when the plumber had gone, I quickly got my lunch, (scrambled tofu), and then made myself a chamomile tea. While the chamomile tea was brewing I emptied the shelf in the cupboard. Later on, at just after 1:00pm, the plumber came back and fitted us a new stopcock. This one is easier. It's just like a lever, and to switch the water off, you just move it down to the right. He made a lot of noise when he was doing it, so I said I hoped the neighbours were listening because they are always making banging noises. When he'd finished he took a photo of it to show us because it was easier than trying to look at it in the cupboard. Then my Mum payed him. She gave him £140 but he was still trying to take less because of the £10 tip my Mum had given him.earlier. I said, that was a tip! If my Mum wants to give you a tip, she can! So he laughed and accepted it. Then my Mum said, if we need anything else doing we'll call you. Then he was off. Then I put all the things back in the cupboard. After that I was a bit exhausted, so said I'd have a rest before I did the washing up. And here I am, having a rest and writing this. In a minute I will put out the ingredients for tonight's dinner, and then I'll wash up. Later I'll have a good look at the instruction booklet for the new washing machine. What have you lot been getting up to? I hope you are all well. Have a nice day.

At last! So glad he came (twice!) and sorted everything out. Hopefully now you'll have no more problems. And he seems OK so better keep his details in case you need help again : )

She has paid way over the odds for something she could have got included from somewhere like Currys for £50 or less!

@Fleura Right. By my reckoning, Sharon has paid at least £260 plus a tip for an installation. This is the equivalent of buying another washing machine. The plumber has only replaced the stopcock, so it’s all labour cost. There obviously wasn’t an isolation valve on the end of the pipe to connect to. I would hope that the plumber fitted one for future use and not have to turn the main stopcock off every time. If not, it’s another £140 to fork out at his rates. Shocking!

@Orson_Kart I keep saying she could have done it herself, but she says it's not that easy and obviously I can't see the details from here. Personally I've plumbed in four or five washing machines and it was the work of a few minutes but I'm not going to keep arguing about it!

You were washing dishes and the kitchen floor at 2 am? Couldn't you sleep? I hope you don't spill coffee in your bed!

You must be relieved to have your washer back. I know I was, when I got my new one delivered. Although going to the laundrymat wasn't too bad. Something different!

You have paid way too much for the installation. Where did you buy the washing machine? If you bought it from Currys, AO, or one of the other big retailers, it would have been around £50 to disconnect, install, and dispose of your old machine. No wonder he was embarrassed to take the tip. He’s ripped you off. I’m sorry I didn’t read the previous posts about your washing machine troubles in time, or I could have given you some ‘free’ advice.

@sharonelton If you think £50 is cheap then you’ll think I am far too cheap. If I’d been nearer to you I would have offer to do it for the cost of the parts, a cup of tea, and a packet of those Love, Corn, that sound so delicious.

I think £50 is way too cheap for installing a washing machine. If someone was charging that much I'd be suspicious he wasn't doing a good job.

You found a great new person to be your plumber! He sounds like a gem, and finally, you can get your laundry done. Nothing much is going on here; just trying to keep warm.

Yes, he was a very nice plumber. We will probably use him again if we need anything else doing. I will get my laundry done when I've worked out how to use it! It's a bit cold in my bedroom so I've put my jumper on.

@sharonelton Clean clothes at last!! That plumber seems like someone to hold onto. I haven’t done very much today, but I’m quite exhausted doing it. Having rose petal tea now. Tasted like perfume.
