Heated water bowls

The prairie dogs at the zoo are Kansas natives. They have a sunken area where they can dig burrows. They are given plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to eat through out the day. There is an electric fence around the top to keep them in place, otherwise they would take over the entire park. It seems to be turned off for the winter as it was not making any sounds that it usually makes. I was pleased to notice that in this enclosure there were water bowls that have enough heat that the water will not freeze. You could see the electric lines. They do a great job taking care of the small beasts. I know you can get things like this for your outdoor animals for you home. I just never thought of a zoo doing it.

That is really cool. I love hearing that these places truly take care of their animals. Bixby, Oklahoma, about 10 years ago, was having terrible trouble with prairie dogs, and the city was really fighting with some of the residents. They were destroying people’s property, but the city said it would be illegal to kill them because of animal cruelty. It was quite a mess.
