The Soul Mate Connection

This is a very condensed version of how Martin and I met and eventually stayed together. I had promised to tell about it to @1creekgirl and I always keep a promise.
Back in 1994, I was coming off of a really unsuccessful marriage and my mom who at that time had already passed the age of 80 was eager to return to her homeland Latvia. My father’s urn was with us to be reburied in his homeland in Ranka in a country cemetery not too far from where he was born and raised.
Also going through an unsuccessful marriage Martin had two small children a boy Andris and a girl Mara. Both are now married with their own families.
That first Midsummer celebration on June 23, 1994, we literally ran into each other, and as they say, the rest is history.
These things are what I call the “soul mate connection”.
With the passage of time we suddenly little by little piecing together similarities’ realized we were soul mates, born to be together. To me it was that the fates had given me Latvian parents to eventually cross the sea to live in Latvia otherwise we would not have met.
Both of our houses mine on Lapotnes Street and his parents’ house on Taures Street had the number 16.
Both our fathers had purchased the same types of pocket knives. My father in Riga took the knife with him to Germany during WW II, to America, and then I took it back to Riga, Latvia. During the Soviet Era, his father had chosen the same type of pocket knife and we kept both knives together.
Both our parents got married in the month of September. Mine in Augustdorf, Germany, and his in Riga. Of course, different times and years.
Martin’s mom was born on May 24th and my mom on May 26th in different years. My mom was the first to leave us on March 20th in 1996 and on March 24, 2006 we lost his mom.
I wish that those 20 very happy years had not passed so quickly. To my imagination, it was like stepping on a brightly lit stage full of family, friends, and happy times. Then slowly the stage goes dark, I am standing in a spotlight, and then the curtain goes down. So here I am in Florida.
The photo is of Martin in our garden one spring when everything was in bloom.

Yes, it is sad your love story didn't last longer, but at least you had those 20 years which I am sure is comforting.

I really like the photo. I so wish, as you do, that your love story had lasted longer. But oh how glad I am that you had him in the first place! My eyes are all teary having read your post, and I am glad, always, to read of loves like yours and Martin.

Martin looked to be such a great and happy man. It is a shame you could not spend many more years together. I know how much you miss him. You said it so well, as the year passes the stage goes dark and less and less people are on the stage. You have those great memories and you spent 20 wonderful years together.

@1creekgirl it was like a lovely dream from which I awakened too soon. It is a comfort to have all the memories though,

The cosmos is amazing, isn't it? How things like this happen. How interesting. So glad you shared this with us.
When I was married to my now ex I thought it interesting that I was born in 1951, him in 1961, my daughter in 1971 and, my granddaughter in 1991.

I read the first time you told me and made me cry I spot checked this one so it would not.
You did well in life and its more than most people get and that is not a slap. That is a badge of honor you should cherish and so happy you told everyone. People do love their compasses of which way they go.

@crossbones27 and among the important things is that even though life was tough for my parents during WW II they did get to NYC and had me and the fates brought me back to Latvia with my mom to meet my soul mate.

That's a great picture and a great story. I'm so sorry your marriage was cut short. I wish there was a way for you to return to Latvia some day.

@LindaOHio I have been thinking about the fact that right now I could not return but if the fates once again intervene and I am meant to return I know I will
