So I thought I said something about this

I probably did not say anything about this, and only thought I posted it, or I planned to post it this morning and Bob got up early and derailed my train of thought.
Today, Monday, we started school two hours late. That let everyone be more safe with all the snow.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, will be a full day.
I rode the afternoon bus because my other half of the bus crew had a doctor's appointment.
For being a short day it certainly was tiring.
One of the things that derailed me is that Bob wanted me to order his sister a heated blanket.
She lives out in the boonies in New Hampshire and has not maintained her home and is not getting out at all. She has no heat, no hot water, a leaky roof and a crumbling basement. One sister sent her grocery money. Her live in guy is in a nursing home due to a stroke but one of his daughters took her for groceries.
We all live so far apart.
So, he had called the sister in Ohio and told her what we were doing. She was afraid it would make her electric bill too high. A high bill is better than dying of hypothermia, though.
I am headed to a nap and a phone call to my daughter.
Have a great evening.

That is a really sad situation his sister is in. Makes me so sad people are that poor they would freeze because they can’t afford heat or electricity. I sure hope she plugs that heating blanket in you guys bought for her. That was a very thoughtful gift.

We have been thinking she has some sort of dementia. We are not able to go take care of things for her. She has a reverse mortgage on the house. Her kids do not come check on her.

That's horrible. We did without heal and hot water for about 2 weeks; and that was enough for me. Aren't there any county or state programs that will help her? Surely there must be.

Hearing from the sister in Ohio, they have moved the sister in New Hampshire into a place that has heat and utilities. We do not any of us have the details clearly--it may have been a friend, it may have been a state agency.

Is there no one willing to take her in? Sounds like the place she's living in should be condemned.

We get all of our information second or third hand. She has no family in New Hampshire. I am not sure where her two sons are. Someone has really fallen down on the job of making sure maintenance is done. She and her deceased husband built this log cabin home from the ground up, probably a kit. They put it where it is, in a very rural part of New Hampshire. They hand chose all the stones from the woods nearby for the fireplace. When her husband was alive things were always done just so. She has had a guy living with her for about ten years, backed out of marrying him, which in our opinion was good, but I do not know how much he contributed to expenses. He is in a rehab nursing home following a stroke. His adult children sometimes check on her.

@BarBaraPrz We just talked with her. She has a case manager. Not being able to get to her mailbox, her bills have been unpaid, so her house phone was shut off and her cell phone is broken. Case manager got her phone turned back on. This sister in Ohio has purchased a new phone for her and is programing it and will mail it. A new furnace will be put in. She spent one night in a hotel but prefers being at home. She is enjoying her new heating blanket.

It makes me think about how isolated we are. The one sister thinks her condition has really gone downhill because she does not get up and do anything. I think she has some dementia. We cannot go there. I think this other sister is the closest, but it is still a ways from Ohio, where she lives, to New Hampshire.

@snowy22315 I am so thankful neither Bob nor I have dementia. I do believe he would do better if more active, but his heart failure makes him very fatigued.

@GardenGerty My dad is like that. He has dementia, and although he is fairly stable at this time, he could be better if he would just do something. He primarily sits around and vegetates. I am glad he at least went to sis's for Thanksgiving. He was there a few days, at least it was a change of pace and acitivity. My mother can't even get him to take a walk most of the time.

Are you planning on going to New Hampshire? She is in Meredith in a log cabin home (modern) on a wooded property.

We are hearing from his Ohio sister that the New Hampshire sister has been moved by someone into a place that has heat and utilities. I do not know if the blanket got there before that happened. I got a notice that it was delivered to her porch.

That is what I told his other sister. We run them a lot. It helps in drafty situations.

Gosh, that sounds very concerning. No heat in New Hampshire in the wintertime is not a good idea! Can you call Adult Protective Services and get them to help her? You can do it anonymously....she needs help for sure. And so far from everyone, she is isolated as well. How sad.

I just posted an update. She has a case manager who is helping her now. She spent one night in a hotel getting warm. Is back at home, and is enjoying her heating blanket. Bob just talked to her. Supposed to get a furnace in this week.

So wonderful that she is getting the help she needs. Rather sad that her children aren’t helping in some way but at least she has some help now.
