Christmas dinner is becoming less popular.

I read an article in the newspaper the other day about how many people in the UK this year are going to swap a traditional Christmas dinner for a takeaway. I am not very fond of either but my family want a traditional dinner with all the trimmings. I can see why some people would rather have a takeaway because then the person who normally has to cook the dinner would be able to spend more time with the family enjoying Christmas instead of being stuck in the kitchen cooking. Which would you prefer Christmas Dinner or Takeaway?

Surely NOT a takeway but now a large traditional dinner as we had in the past. We are only two, I will prepare a nice dinner, but not a lot of food.

@lazydaizee Yes I do, I would never buy ready made, it's not even as good as the food I cook.

@LadyDuck Fresh food is always better than ready made meals because you know what has gone into it.

It's a fast paced life and holidays and vacation becomes the only time when you get to spend quality time with your loved ones. Takeaway might be good for that. On our festivals, I love to cook elaborate traditional dishes for family and friends. I do ask for help from my husband and daughters, so that I am not overloaded and overwhelmed. But we prefer it a traditional way.

Do you mean a takeaway 'traditional Christmas dinner'? Or a takeaway of some other sort, Indian, Chinese, fish and chips or whatever? We are rather traditional here, we like our roast dinner (although we don't always have turkey, in fact I think we've only had it once). I can understand why people would want to avoid all that stress though, especially as so many people nowadays barely know how to cook! Another option is to go out for dinner, which I think I would prefer to a takeaway.

I think they were talking about the usual sort of takeaway in the article. Maybe somebody should start a business selling Christmas dinner to takeaway or a Christmas dinner delivery service. They would be very busy although it would mean their staff would have to work on Christmas day which nobody would want to do. The food would be very expensive because the staff would have to be paid extra.

@lazydaizee Long ago I used to work at a small hotel and their Christmas dinners were very popular. I used to enjoy working there at lunch time, it was a great atmosphere, everyone was in a good mood (plus we got paid extra as you say), we got a free Christmas dinner - and then afterwards I would enjoy the family Christmas dinner with my parents in the evening : )

@Fleura Nice to know that you have some happy memories of Christmas. You must have been full up after eating two Christmas dinners.

I prefer a traditional Christmas dinner. I have everything ready before my family gets here so we can visit and not spend the whole time in the kitchen. And with today's advances, I don't scrub dishes, the dishwasher does, so clean up is easy.

@lazydaizee I was the dishwasher for many years. I'm glad I could give it up. Thank you.

I would prefer Christmas dinner; but physically neither my husband nor I can handle it this year. We will probably have take-out. Have a good day.

What take-out will you be having, or have you not decided yet?

@LindaOHio Hope you enjoy whatever you have. Are the takeaways good where you live ? ours are terrible, they are expensive and sometimes the food is cold and has to be reheated. This is not healthy and what is the point in buying cooked food in if you have to reheat it.?

People do seem to be down in the dumps these days, perhaps the stress of Christmas is making everybody worse.

We still do a traditional Christmas dinner since everyone comes to my house and the family is quite large. I can see where the cooking can be too much and having Takeaway is the best option.

I think that maybe the people who have to cook the dinner would rather be spending time with the family than being stuck in the kitchen .

I am not keen on takeaways because they are expensive and the food is not always good. I have had takeaway food that has been cold when I got it.

I prefer a Christmas Dinner but we usually have a beef rib rather than a turkey. As it is just for the two of us a turkey would be too much (although I'm sure the cats would do their best to help!). I always prep what I can ahead of time so I'm not in the kitchen all that long and we never play host to the family - honestly I'd rather take them out for a meal somewhere and pay for it!

It is easier when there are just two of you .In the past we always had a large turkey on the day , it took ages to cook and we ended up eating it for days after Christmas.

These places probably are busy at this time of year, just like the shops are before Christmas.
