Staying Warm in the Winter Months

It's funny how we hate to see that power bill, especially in the winter months. Ouch! Zing! Etc. I'm glad I started using Budget Pay several years ago. Each month it is the same amount. It helps me budget and know what to expect each month. But I am also trying to find some new ways to keep the apartment warmer without needing to turn the thermostat up. Here are some ways that you may not have thought of: * Buy the strip you put under your door that keeps cold air from coming in under the door. These are very cheap and can be found at the Dollar Store or Walmart. * If you don't use your fireplace or, when you aren't using it plug the chimney so that cold air can't get in. * Unused attic space can make the house lose heat. Installing insulation will help keep the cold out. * How about stepping down onto an area rug instead of hardwood floors on a cold winter morning? * Close vents in parts of the house you aren't using, and change filters. * Pay attention to the weather and if it is sunny utilize the heat, and keep plenty of blankets and socks. * Many ceiling fans have a reverse direction on them. Since heat rises the reverse direction can help push the air back down and keep your house wwarmer. * Be sure to calk gaps or cracks so no cold air can get in through windows or walls. * Protect pipes from freezing. Enjoy a warmer winter. Happy Holidays! The image is from Wallpaper Cave.

Also very heavy curtains with plastic behind them. Especially if you have older windows.

I love living in Florida. It's rare I need to protect my pipes or worry about the cold. However, it's funny you can have the heat on one night and the ac the next.

I do well in winter keeping the bill down, but terrible in summer because I can’t take hot temperatures. The insulation where I live is awful, but management won’t do anything about it. Luckily, I can put on two pairs of socks, a sweatshirt, sweats, and a scarf if it gets too bad. This winter, it hasn’t been necessary so far. Great tips!

Same here. If it gets up above 75 it's too hot for me. Layers are where it's at for me in the winter.

The draft stoppers can help keep cool air in also.

That's a lot. I am glad I am on Budget Pay and just pay the same amount each month.

I think we are wise to do what we can to stop heat loss and stay warm. We use heated blankets or throws and heated mattress pad so we heat our bodies and not the whole house.

I have a nice thick throw I use most of the time. Heating just where you are is the economic way to go.

Beautiful image Celt. Many of these things I cant do as it is only a rental I live in. I have a lovely red hooded robe and slippers that keep me warm. Hope you are warm enough.

I keep all windows shut all the way in the winter. That way no cold air gets inside.
