I am excited that we get a 3.2% raise in January. Every little bit helps. But many are grumpy about it. More money means people in some states will pay more in taxes. Nine states are left taxing Social Security benefits. Those states are Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Kansas, New Mexico, Minnesota, Montana, and Utah. Two more states(Nebraska and Missouri) have become tax-exempt in 2024. That is 41 states now that are tax-exempt.
Before the end of this year, there had been 164,413 reports of scams where the perpetrator pretended to be the government. Social Security took 38,852 reports where $101.58 million was lost.

I'm a realist, I wish I could be excited about the raise but it only means that our prices will go up too. A friend of mine got her letter from Social Security and her 3.2% raise amounted to $13 and small change. I haven't calculated mine yet, but it won't be much either. I just did some calculations, it will give me a little over $30. I can kiss that off in a rent raise.
I have a neighbor who accuses me of being "cheap", it may be true, I prefer to think that I'm being careful.

So true. Very aggravating. My daughter's is about $40 and mine is a little more than that.

@BearArtistLady .......I have seen some hikes and then the price goes back down. I think a lot of stores hike the prices up when they know certain foods are purchased more. Eating out is very expensive.

@celticeagle I did some grocery shopping yesterday, and I am already seeing price hikes. It doesn't seem like much here and there, it might be only 10 or 15 cents here and there, but it does add up. I checked meat prices and those prices have even worse hikes. My neighbor can keep calling me cheap, but I still have a few pennies left at the end of the month, plus I don't frequent the take out places like Taco Bell etc. They "eat" up a raise in no time flat. I looked at donuts yesterday and decided to pass on getting any.

I think Medicare is having another increase in medical premiums for 2024. I could be wrong. Have a good day.

A 3.2% raise is just keeping up with inflation.

I'm happy for the raise even if its a little. My prescription coverage changed and I have to pay more but basically the raise will cover the increase.
