Today is Festivus, and it’s time for the airing of grievances! You know, I’ve never seen an episode of Seinfeld, but I definitely know all about “the holiday for the rest of us.” Jimmy Buffett’s music is NOT on my list of grievances (although it may be on some of your lists ), so I’m celebrating his birth month and his legacy with 31 great Buffett tunes…as judged by me. Here’s the next on the top ten. #9: Coast of Marseilles Here’s another one of the songs that Buffett didn’t write. This was written by Keith Sykes, who also gave us the classic “I’m Not Strange, I’m Just Like You.” (He also co-wrote “Volcano” with Buffett.) Picky Wedia says that songs Sykes has written have sold over 25 million copies, so he’s too busy spending royalty checks to cry over the fact that you’ve never heard of him. One more thing about Sykes: he’s a Kentuckian! He was born in Murray, which is in western Kentucky. This is a stunning ballad. It’s not something you’d expect from Sykes or Buffett, so it was relegated to an album cut. Simply beautiful.
