Lily`s House

United Kingdom
January 3, 2024 4:20am CST
Here is a story about a woman named Jen who goes to sort out her grandmother`s house after the old lady has died. Her grandmother was called Lily. Many people who knew Lily thought she was some sort of witch because she was into an alternative lifestyle. While Jen and her daughter Marianne were sorting through Lily`s things , they uncover some secrets that had been hidden all their lives. The story takes the reader through the events taking place as they unfold, along with Jen`s childhood memories of her grandmother . Even though Lily was known as a witch, the story does not focus on witchcraft or other supernatural goings on, and this is a shame in my opinion.

This sounds interesting, but I usually like a lot when there is something about supernatural in books.

It is intriguing. I am reading a book now, that is a bit strange. It almost seems super natural, but I think the woman is just insane to be honest. It reminds me a bit of "The Others" the Nicole Kidman movie, or the Sixth Sense, but I think what is happening is actually a creation of her own mind.

@LadyDuck You really wonder what is going to happen. Although probably towards the end she will recognize she is the culprit all along.

Sounds pretty interesting..I have ordered the Shining, the ebook from the library, it was unavailable but I do have a rather long book sample of it which I am enjoying. I am looking forward to reading the whole thing again.

Is this the same Shining that was made into a film in 1980 starring Jack Nicholson? I went to see the film and I found it very creepy .It was about a family that work as caretakers in a hotel between tourist seasons. The hotel is empty and there is nobody else about for miles. It is a very strange story, but I will not say anymore about it because it would spoil it for you if it is the same story.

@lazydaizee The film with Jack Nicholson is very different from the book. A short series made for the TV (same title "The Shining") was a lot more like the book. The ending of the movie you watched has nothing to do with the ending of the book. In fact Stephen King stopped talking with the Director (Stanley Kubrick) because he hated how he had changed his story.

@LadyDuck I read the book when it first came out, but I don't recall the ending. The character, Jack Torrance,,,(the dad) is not very likable from the beginning though.

Some authors are not very adventurous are they? Hope you enjoy the story.

@celticeagle No just a grown up fiction book. However, I do enjoy reading young adult books and children`s books even though I am over 60 years old.

I did enjoy the story and meeting the characters, but I would have liked it to be a bit more scary as there was a character who was supposed to have been a witch. Maybe the book description gave me the wrong idea.

It was an interesting story with some good characters. A few chapters in we are told that Jen is actually deaf and when she speaks to her daughter she uses sign language. Some of the characters in the story find this fascinating.

@lazydaizee No, not really. Was supposed to drive my husband back from his cataract surgery; but he had a sore throat so they cancelled. Just as well because I hate to drive and it was s**wing! (Snow is a bad word!) lololol

@LindaOHio I hope he feels better soon. I have mild cataracts at the moment with one eye being worse than the other. I have to wait until the cataract is ripe or something before I can get it treated. How far would you have to drive for the appointment? Snow is awful it can make it hard to get about and it makes everything more dangerous. I avoid going out in the snow and we are supposed to be getting some soon.

Not really , I think it could have been more scary as a witch was involved in the story.
