The World Today as I See it

I am 72 years young. I grew up in a world where my grandmother never locked her doors. When I was a child people were nice and respectful. Now it's as if a button was switched and people went a bit nutsy. I have also seen unruly neighbors being irresponsible and setting fire to garbage in their yards. I have seen a black man beaten to a bloody pulp for stealing a football out of a joint when I was in the carnival. I've seen little kids taking a dump right on the midway in the carnival too. Domestic violence and serial killers are a normal part of life now. I see the horrors in the news. Shootings at schools, shootings at gay hangouts, violent fights outside bars, ethnic upevil, men being beaten by police, Scientologists letting rapists go without any legal backlash whatsoever, and the list goes on and on. But, none of these negative things need to be attributed to our president or present-day politics. Some but not all. I think these things partially have to do with a lack of family upbringing on an individual basis. It used to be that the entire family lived in one home. By 'entire' I mean the grandparents too. It was a generational home. Old traditional values were learned and appreciated in the home. Respect, honesty, ethical behavior, etc. all were taught in the home. Nowadays usually there are just two generations in a family home. Parents and offspring. In many homes, traditions are more lax and children are not expected to act in any certain way. Some families have absent parents and kids don't even see their parents very often. The kids run wild and do as they please. In that kind of family, there is little respect and teaching in the home. This failure to take responsibility for raising children who are honest and have ethics is what I see as the downfall of this country. Not our president, not our senators, governors, mayors, school teachers, etc. fault. (How can a school teacher be effective in the classroom if the kids are disrespectful and unruly and the parents won't do anything?) It seems that people are either extreme or rather lax in their beliefs and how they act. As long as we have a democracy and live in a world where we have politicians with ethics and rules then we are halfway there and we can make change. We can vote for whoever we see fit to be in that seat. But, just remember we are one election away from the military being deployed in our streets to maim anyone who goes against the fascist in office. The country has its problems but without democracy, it could get a lot worse.

I was raised by old-fashioned religious parents. I can't say the same for today's kids. I rarely see parents discipline their children. I hate how this world has changed. However, advancements can contribute to laziness.

I was raised by an overbearing mother. She insisted on being into my stuff. After I got married I had to put my foot down.

When's your birthday? I'm nearing you in age. I turned 71 last July. I agree, the teachings need to begin in the homes.

In my country the same thing is happening. Society is ill. Values have changed since I was young. My world was centered in being. What did I want to BE (or TO BECOME) when I grew up. Now the entire world is centered in HAVING

I can see where some values would change but not to such a degree as I am seeing nowadays. It was all so innocent when I was young.

I wish we could go back to those days. We only started locking up about 10 years ago. Things have changed even here in the middle of nowhere

I do too! My grandparents were so trusting. We sure can't be that way today. It's sad.

Without democracy we all might as well walk about waving white flags and just giving up.

@2ndchances24 ........Even with jobs and time away from home parents can still be good role models and teach their kids right from wrong. They used to have their parents to help. Not so much anymore.

@2ndchances24 .......And their peers will be paying for their keep with their taxes. Sorry to hear of your lack of parenting. I was lucky and grandparents and parents both. I had a wonderful childhood. I'm sorry you didn't.

Luckily in my house anyway which is very limited, that is where our world exists. Anything on the outside is kept outside..and so grateful I am for that, even if the environment we exist in is bad. It is definitely a cruel world sadly.

We are seeing the same here in Europe. May be less extreme, but the good old values are fading. Young people are not respectful, they want everything without working. This is a sick society.

Really? Sick is right. So very sad. My grams would turn over in her grave if she saw what some kids get away with nowadays.

@celticeagle I know that she would have never let me and my brother behave as most kids do in our days.

Your last paragraph was unnecessary to the post. Which I agree with. Discipline and respect begin in the home. If parents won't do it, nobody else can and children run wild.

Thanks for editing girl. I wanted to emphasize this and so I repeated it. Kids go by what the parents do.

I know what you mean. A vlogger who goes by the name The Watchman mentioned that since prayer is forbidden in public schools and the lack of a nuclear family, we are being judged by God by allowing evil acts in our land.

I come from an era in which a parent could spank a child. Now a parent doesn't dare raise a hand to a child. I think we turned out OK. Kids are definitely out of control. I don't see it improving.
