This word was created in 2015. It was during the European games and hosted by Azerbaijan. It was said that the nation was utilizing sports as a diversion from its dismal human rights record. Thus, it is being used to give a good reputation for a bad image known by. Regardless, it can also be a word of choice to give a good impression not only of a country's image but also of companies or individuals. Are you familiar with this word? Yes, and “greenwashing” (to do with environmental concerns) is in the same vein as sportswashing. I remember very well what you are talking about with this sportswashing event. It was pathetic.

I also think that some countries are aiming for this practice. I read that Saudi Arabia will be sportswashing for the coming years.
