Road to town

Bob had a doctor's appointment in Marion. The roads were okay. That is a good thing as I have work tomorrow. Then we will have to go to Newton to pick up a new prescription for him. It is actually one my doctor talked about giving me, but we are waiting to see how I am doing in June. Bob's heart failure is stable, not getting any worse. It will never get better. National Weather Service has predicted extreme cold wind chills for our area until January 16. I did not notice any wind this afternoon, but I am doing extra to prepare. I have added a change of warm clothes to the car, as well as Bob's Carhartt brand quilted coveralls. I will make sure to have snack food in the car. I also have water. I need to get a metal can and a candle and lighter--That will heat an entire car if you get stuck somewhere. We will not be going anywhere remote, though. Years ago, before I met Bob, my aunt told me she was scared to drive in winter. She had brought my grandmother to my Sister's for Thanksgiving. I told her about these preparations. She laughed at me for doing it. She would rather worry, I guess. None of them are with us now, not my sister, aunt, grandmother. I think I like to be prepared.

I think you are very wise to be prepared. Over here, the weather (for us) isn't so extreme but in summer, it's always a very good idea to have water with you.

@GardenGerty When I was a child we never had water-bottles with us but now no-one seems to move without them.

Being prepared just makes me feel better all around. I always have water, a blanket, and uh, toilet paper. You never know! Is YOUR heart doing okay? You mentioned Bob’s new medication was considered for you…

The medication actually is a diabetic medication, that is considered to be heart protective, lowering cholesterol and blood pressure. Neither of us need our BP lowered, though. Heart disease is often a complication of diabetes.

It is wise to be prepared, we never know what drifts lie ahead of us around the next bend in the road. I remember being in the car for 4 long and exhausting hours trying to make the 20 minute drive home one winter's afternoon. I never made it, and became part of a convoy of stranded vehicles saved by the heroics of a kind tractor driver, who rescued each and every one of us, pulled us out of our snow drift and lead us back into town. I was able to leave my car running for the majority of the time that I was in it, I had a full tank of gas and it didn't use much just sitting and running to keep the heat on.

I'm glad you're prepared. We have severe windchills coming our way from Monday to Wednesday. I missed something. When did your sister pass? I'm sorry for your loss.

I'm like you, I'd rather be prepared and never need it than to need it and not have it, especially in extreme weather conditions. Stay safe.

The candle in a can is an interesting idea. It was snwing again this morning but has mostly disappeared now at 10:30 am, and the sun is making a valiant effort to come out from the clouds. It's supposed to get to 3°C.
