Trying something new

When we were at the store yesterday I checked the reduced price produce. I always do. For 99 cents I got a bag with six small peppers in it. Not sure what kind they are. I will check on them the next time I am in the store. They have a little heat but are basically mild. They are a size similar to the mini sweet peppers and they are whitish or pale green. One was beginning to have a little blush color. I have a lot of chicken cooked up to put into recipes, so I cleaned the seeds out of these peppers and took off the stems. I filled each small pepper with cooked chicken, and topped with some pimiento cheese sandwich spread. I am cooking them in a cast iron tray for about a half hour. It should be good. This could be a good light evening meal. I have hot sauce and salsa and sour cream on the table. I always have food on hand and it seems pretty fun to experiment.

It was very good. We experiment all the time. These peppers had a little heat, more than a banana pepper but no where near as hot as even a jalapeno.

@GardenGerty ........I don't like them really spicy. But I don't mind a mild petter. We used to get Greek ones. Can't remember their name.

Not much of a fan of peppers, but that does sound interesting. I hope it turns out/turned out well.

It was good. It hit that spot that has been telling us to go to a Mexican restaurant, and cost much less. Last time we went to a favorite Mexican restaurant, we both got sick. With this we did not.

That sounds good. I wonder if they were poblano peppers which are a little bit more mild than jalapeno peppers. We love to experiment when we cook as well.

These are smaller than poblanos and poblanos are dark green. I used to have a chicken poblano recipe that was quite good. I have not made it in years, though.

I'm not one for spicy things like peppers and pimento cheese. I hope you enjoyed the peppers. Have a good weekend.

If the chicken is already cooked and the cheese is in the form of a spread, why would you cooked the assembled items for half an hour? Wouldn't a minute in the nuker do?

I wanted it to brown a little, and the chicken was cold. If I had been in a massive hurry the microwave would have been my go to.

The chicken was free from commodities, peppers were 99 cents, pimiento spread was reduce priced and we used about $1.65 worth. I could not tell about the price of salsa and sour cream but probably less than 50 cents total so we fed two of us for just over $3 It tasted wonderful.

@RebeccasFarm We have not used food bank yet, but we could if we wanted to get in line. They often have frozen meat.I have a friend who works helping organize and hand out the food. Commodities are USDA surplus and we get various proteins all the time. They only come alternate months. We get cans of processed beef and pork, frozen fish and chicken. Canned salmon.

Although I dislike peppers, I do love to check out and often buy from the reduced produce section. I saw online today, that the Loblaws chain (one of Canada's largest grocery chains) has changed their reduced price from 50% off to 30% off. How insulting, it will end up causing trouble especially for those who aren't checking dates as they should and they get meat reduced.

For meat it is usually 40% off, and other shelf stable items. For produce it is 99 cents per mesh bag or bundle of bananas. I think because fresh produce goes bad much faster.

@GardenGerty The media made such a big deal over the 20% that today I noticed that the 50% stickers were back.

It was. I now need to go back to the store and find out exactly what those peppers were. The dish felt like a Mexican restaurant style dish, but cost us much less and did not have a lot of fat in it.
