My Second Marriage ~ Part Two

A few months down the line there was some bad dealings that involved DCN. He went to the hole, our visits were canceled and then he was transferred to Walla, Walla Washington. This was/is one of the tougher prisons in the country at that time and I found it very hard to deal with him being so far away. He was contained in the hole(I guess they call the area they are in when they first get there the SHU) for a time and so we weren't even able to write to one another. I waited long enough and called up to the prison one day. I was upset and emotional on the phone, lied, and told them that it was an ER. The person I spoke with said they could leave a message for him and he might be able to call me back. I waited. Days passed and I tried to work. I paced. I fretted. I waited some more. I paced more. I fretted more. Finally, several days later I got a call. He was okay. He was out of the SHU they called it as I recall. It is where they go after being transferred until they decide what their he is going to live on. We began discussing a visit. He can have one of the other inmate's 'old ladies' arrange me and my daughter a place to stay. Arrangements were made and we went to Walla, Walla Washington's prison for the first time. Its inmate capacity was 2,439 and it has the reputation of having some very hardened criminals incarcerated there. He got it all set up and I started going up to see him. I was making more money than working for the telephone company. I realized how bored he must be and got him to start a GED class. I sent him a radio and some art supplies. I also found a lovely set of rings and sent him his at one point. My daughter enjoyed traveling to see him. Sometimes I would leave her at my mom's or grandmother's and go up alone. One time I took the train up there by myself. I remember I was sitting in the back row and the conductor occasionally would come up to me and ask me if I needed anything. I thought that was a little weird but very nice of them. At the end of the long train ride, I found that there was a wheelchair folded and pushed up against the back of the seat I sat on. They must have thought I was in a wheelchair. This is part two of three.

You were so dedicated to this man at that time - wow! It's amazing how you actually worked it out to visit him. On to part 3!

Most prisons do not allow you to bring stuff in at all anymore.

I can't imagine the frustration you felt with not hearing from him when they transferred him. I'm glad he eventually contacted you and you could visit him.
