A Massive Profit Generating Machine

It happens to be a love or hate relationship that people have with Walmart stores. Many people will declare they hate it. Yet at the same, they will still shop there. Not that Walmart is the cheapest when it comes to all things. But it is certainly cheaper on many things, and to not shop there for any reason is to literally toss money out into the street. As such, because of the massive profit generating machine that Walmart happens to be, I think owning stock in the company makes sense. Walmart operates 10,500 stores in 19 countries. Walmart employs 2.2 million people worldwide, 1.6 million of them in the U.S. Walmart is a $437 billion dollar company. Walmart generates nearly $700 billion a year in annual revenue. Walmart enjoys profits of nearly $156 billion a year. Walmart serves 230 million customers a week. Sure, Walmart may be the biggest now and that may not last forever. However, I don't think Walmart goes anywhere any time soon for many decades. It does not offer the greatest dividend, paying out 1.4% or just $2.28 per share a year. Still, it is a consistent dividend payer, an "aristocrat" stock that has paid dividends and increased dividends for the past 25+ years. It is also worth noting that the combined wealth of the Walton family heirs is $247 billion, and if Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart, were alive today, he would be the richest man in the world. I am happy to have it in my portfolio.

And, I love shopping there for most things. When I'm not shopping on Amazon. I think they must be doing something right if they are doing so well.

The thing they are doing right is having the best prices on a lot of the things they sell and having nearly anything you need all in one place.

@porwest I could argue best prices, but then again in some cases I might agree. But your one-stop shop is the real appeal.

@kaylachan Oh no. We agree. Walmart does not have the best prices on everything, and there are only certain items I buy from them that are. But that's their appeal and that's what drives customers in. MOST PEOPLE don't know a good price and so they buy more there than they probably should. But that's marketing. Not consumer smarts. But it still makes for amazing profits.

Is Walmart cheaper than Target? No Walmart where I live and I don’t know why.

@porwest I buy my Softsoap refill there. Cheaper than in the supermarket or the pharmacy.

@lovebuglena It is more expensive at Target for the Softsoap refill. I buy Equate refill bottles for about $3.97 at Walmart.

Walmart is most assuredly cheaper than Target on nearly everything. I do not like Target at all and do not shop there at all. Ever.

The only two places I enjoy and shop online are Walmart and Amazon, Between the two of them I usually get everything I need and not spend too much,

@porwest Well I usually use Amazon because I get gift cards from survey sites. So I had a $10 gift card and I got dry cat food, a new battery and wall charger for my Pentax digital camera, and 3 different food stuffs for myself plus free shipping for 39.49 and I think that is a good deal for me.

@RasmaSandra Yeah, if it's coming from gift cards, probably a good deal. When I get gift cards, so long as I have the option, I get Walmart ones because the money goes farther and it tends to be far more useful to me.

I find Amazon to be usually rather expensive on 99.9% of things. Not always. I do get SOME things from Amazon. But it is an EXTREMELY short list. I shop everywhere. Dollar Tree. Ruler Foods. Schnuck's. Walmart. Aldi. Those places get the bulk of my business and it all depends on what I need and who has the best price or a deal.

We shop there about once a week. We've gotten into the habit of my filling the cart online; and hubs goes and picks up the order. He never has to go into the store. Have a good week.

I get why YOU do it. But I have to tell you, it irritates me that so many people DO do it. Those people with the carts for filling customer orders are ALWAYS IN MY DAMN WAY! lol
