My latest recycling project

When I think about it I do seem to write quite often about my repair and recycling projects. I guess that’s just a reflection of my life! My latest project was to make something out of my favourite trousers. I bought them back in the 1990s and wore them a lot. They were jeans-style trousers but they were made from patches of cotton in all sorts of patterns, the label said ‘100% scraps’! They had a button fastening at the fly instead of a zip, and after many years the button holes were too worn to hold the buttons any more. I replaced the buttons with a strip of wide elastic and that kept them going for a while longer, but eventually some of the fabric patches themselves developed holes in the actual fabric. I could have patched the patches and of course it would have looked perfectly OK, but all the different thicknesses and different layers would have made them difficult to wash and dry. So in the end I decided they had reached the end. But still I didn’t want to throw them out. I tried to think of how I could make them into something else, but there wasn’t really enough intact fabric to make any other garment. So in the end I combined them with another pair of worn-out trousers and made this beanbag. The ‘beans’ came from a worn-out fake leather beanbag that someone was giving away on Freegle. I think the beanbag looks stylish and authentic. That's a nice story about your old trouser. You could start a DIY YouTube videos since you are talented in recycling.

Thanks! Not sure about videos but I'm quite tempted by the idea of a blog as @AmbiePam has suggested.

@Fleura Hopefully, someday. I know two people other than me who would read it. They are both environmental warriors, and aim to be as thrifty as possible. Both are nurses, and really care about people. They sound a lot like you, huh.

Thanks! You did inspire me with that blog idea - but when I looked into the various options I didn't know where to start so it ground to a halt again!

You did a fine job, everything is recycled with this project. It actually gives me an idea for something that I would like, thank you.

You're right by the way, I forgot to mention that it uses two zips and both of those are also recycled from old garments!

That is so awesome that the trousers to begin with were recycled scraps and then you were able to keep them in use so long and turn them into something else again. I love it thanks for sharing! What will this bean bag be for? Tossing like a game or sitting on? I can’t gauge how big it is in the photo.

Thank you! Yes it's for sitting on. It's a little bit on the small side for me but perfect for the girls.

It is really one of a kind isn't it? How did you even think of that creative idea?

It is one of a kind that's true. I never even saw anyone else wearing trousers like these so I don't expect there can be any beanbags around like it! I don't know what made me think of it really. The girls both have beanbags which we all like to sit on so it just seemed like a good idea.

That's certainly a great way to recycle your pants into a bean bag. I Never would have thought of that!

I thought about cushion covers, but we already have plenty of those (I made one out of my favourite 'The Mountain' T-shirt not long ago.)

Good idea! Yet, if all people were like you, the garment industry would collapse. :-)

That's the snag of course. If we all consumed less, as we should, the economy would suffer a huge decline. I don't know the answer to this conundrum

You are truly resourceful! Good job finding a way to recycle those trousers. Now instead of wearing them, you’ll be sitting on them!

It seemed sensible - after all it wouldn't be unsightly! But in practical terms I don't think it would have worked. These are the original trousers.
