I usually write something about the Mardi Gras each year. I am very into New Orleans and the food and culture of the area. Ghosties, voodoo, and Anne Rice are a part of it too, and are always interesting to me.
Mardi Gras has been around for centuries and this year it will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 13th. It is a celebration leading up to Lent and there are parades, parties, and all manner of good food during this time. It is also called Fat Tuesday ( which is what it means in French)or Pancake Tuesday. This is during the fasting season of Lent.
The colors one will see are green signifying faith, gold signifying power, and purple signifying justice. Beads of these colors are thrown from floats and worn by celebrators.
It is an entire season with it beginning January 6th known as Twelfth Night. It may have its beginnings in Pagan times with their spring festivals. It was added to the Gregorian calendar by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. Mardi Gras was first celebrated in the United States in Mobile, Alabama in 1703.

I remember seeing the parades on television locally when I was living in the suburbs from 1978-2009. Greatest free party of all time.

I lived in New Orleans for awhile when I was a child. The Mardi Gras Parade is a nice memory. I remember all of the beads and candy that we caught.

How fun for you as a child. I couldn't handle the crowd. I would like to experience it from a balcony perhaps.

@celticeagle I do recall it being very crowded. I wouldn’t care for the crowd now either.
