A ‘candle-lit’ concert

I’ve often seen concerts by candle light advertised, generally featuring well-known classical music or historical instruments. But somehow I never managed to get around to going to one. Then I found myself working at the venue for an evening when one of these concerts was on. In fact the concert was quite short, just an hour long, and it was obviously part of a tour, because the concert was performed twice in the one evening, and then everything was packed up and taken away to go somewhere else. So I got to see/listen to it all twice and get paid for the privilege! It was really enjoyable. What made me laugh though was that they didn’t use real candles, it would be far too risky in a historical building and far too much of a fire hazard. So instead they had hundreds of those LED pretend candles, the sort that are moulded to look as though the wax is melting and they have a little wobbly bit of silvery stuff to imitate a flickering flame. In fact the whole thing was quite effective, and at the end people were queueing up to take selfies with the candles as the backdrop. But once they had all left we spent about 20 minutes crawling about the floor turning off the little switch in each ‘candle’ and then packing them all up in boxes Have you ever been to an event like this? You've explained exactly the candles we had at a restaurant quite recently. That would have been quite something - to see all those candles.

Those kind of candles would have been so much better for the candle light church services we used to have New Year’s Eve when I was a child. They’d stick a candle in/through a short paper cup to let it catch the dripping wax, hand them out to everyone, and hope people kept an eye on their children!

i remember Christingle services where the children each had a candle stuck into an orange. And that was quite recent, when Big One was little.

I've seen the candles, but never heard about a concert with them. I'm glad it was enjoyable.

I don’t like classical music and am not really a fan of live shows and things so this is probably something I will never see in my lifetime. I am glad you got to see it and enjoyed it. I do think it very odd to use fake candles though. If they couldn’t do real ones I’d have not done it at all if I was in charge but I’m very literal on things.

Definitely not your sort of thing then! And yes, if people were expecting real candles they'd be disappointed.
