Do You Know Where Your Groundhog Is?

Tomorrow is Groundhog Day whether we want it to be or not. Punxsutawney Phil from Pennsylvania is my favorite and I think he is so handsome. That is his photo. Ha also happens to be the most famous groundhog in the US and they say he has been predicting the weather since the late 1800s. So we can imagine how many different groundhogs have been given this name and most likely the latest is perhaps the great great great grandson of the first. Groundhog Day has become traditional and different celebrations go with it. However, you can imagine the poor groundhogs having just woken up from a long winter’s nap to find a hand reaching for them to pull them out of their holes. Personally, I know that weather prediction is definitely not on their minds but what is, is finding some food quick and having a feast. Let’s review what this day is supposed to mean. If the groundhog sees his shadow he’ll go back into hibernation and we can expect more freezing weeks of winter. However, it he does not see his shadow the warmer weather is fast approaching. I have lost all belief in the weather as I remember the sunny warm days I spent here during my first year in Florida which were completely different from the cold days I am facing now. No groundhog can help me. So what do we call them besides groundhogs? They are formerly referred to as marmot monax or woodchucks. Other names for the species can be beaver, whistler, and whistle pig. I love this last one it makes me chuckle. So tomorrow February 2 if you are longing for an early spring pull out a groundhog and see what happens. If the fellow doesn’t bite you he might oblige predicting before he hops back into his hole. Ohio has buckeye chuck. The 2 groundhogs often don't agree

I'm hoping he gives us all a good report, cause the warmer the weather gets the more work I can get done, in the yard it's a MESS.

I remember them being referred to as marmots in England. That's a good link Sandra. Hope the weather will be good.

Whether Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow or not, spring is 47 days away. I don't trust a groundhog and really weathermen in general for getting it right. Every week since the second week in December the weathermen have said we would see flurries on a certain day during the week. How many have fallen? Zero.

@Dena91 our temps are bouncing between the 60s during the day and the 50s at night. It makes me look at Florida that you are either freezing or roasting,

I think Spring weather will be here a lot sooner than usual either way, our winter has been pretty weak. Even when it snows, it’s just that slushy snow, and not all that cold out. Just a couple coldies but that was it. And OH MY GOODNESS what a sweet face on that groundhog. Cutie-pie

@Melanie_Marie yes, that is Phil my favorite. Poor guy will be pulled out of his warm hole tomorrow. Our temps here in Florida are still much cooler than I like it.

@RasmaSandra Yeah I’ve heard that about FL this year. And I always thought the groundhogs just randomly came out of hiding during the day anyway to eat and stuff, and the people intentionally waited for them to come out on Feb. 2nd to observe them and look for the shadow. Had no idea they purposely pulled them out! All for a tradition. Leave ‘em alone

We do not have groundhogs here to predict if the winter is over. We celebrate Candlemas today and we have this saying: "If Candlemas is fair and bright, winter will have another fight. If Candlemas brings cloud and rain, winter won't come again". It seems the same as the groundhog who sees his shadows. Today is fair and bright.

@RasmaSandra This is what I have read, that your marmot predicted an early spring, while the weather here showed that the winter will be back. I just checked the weather forecast and I see "heavy rain" and rop in temperature from Wednesday February 7 and during 8 days.

Right now it is really windy here! The power is out in the next neighborhood over. I think a tree fell on some power lines.

@RasmaSandra We had a bit of rain here today. But not much. I saw sun for most of the day. We'll see if it clouds up again this evening.

I think it's a cute tradition. I don't believe he can predict the weather, but it's a nice tradition to detract from the mundane, dreary winter days. My prediction: Spring is coming early. We've had almost no winter. Temps are way above normal and have been for all but one week. So, yes, I think we're in for an early spring. That's my prediction. Sad, I know.
