Self CheckOut

We go to a grocery store that charges a 10% fee at the checkout. Groceries are supposedly marked at the price the store buys them (??) and they add the 10% to cover costs. So if I go through the self check out, I think they should not charge me that 10%, as they don't have to pay a cashier. It's only fair. Self checkout, to me is like ordering an Uber, and I have to drive.

That's good and fair. Here no matter you take advantage of the self-checkout or not, the price is fixed and there is no discount. Anyway, most of the time I still use self-checkout since I can double check the things I buy and make sure there is no mistake.

You should ask why you are paying that fee at a self check out. I would.

Supposedly they sell all items at THEIR Cost, and you pay 10% to cover wages, insurance,, etc. etc. But I have to say, that a LOT of their products...I can find CHEAPER at other stores, so whoever is buying for that store needs to do a better job. LOL Because if I can find it cheaper at another store BEFORE the 10% added on...they are getting over charged on their inventory. LOL

I guess it would depend on what that 10% is. If you are saying that the 10% is simply a fee, but the price on the shelf is at store cost, it would make no sense for the store to only charge what they paid for the items. How would they expect to stay in business without some sort of profit vehicle? If the 10% is just a fee, but items on the shelf are marked up as any store would normally do, then I agree with you. I think self-checkout should offer more in terms of value to customers if we are encouraged to use them. That being said, the cost of installing and maintaining self-checkouts might actually be more than the cost of a cashier. But I also think eventually they pay for themselves.

@Ghostlady I am with you on the self-checkouts. I hate them and almost always refuse to use them unless I am forced to. Which is rare that happens, but it HAS happened a couple of times at Dollar Tree and Dollar General. But yeah, even if the business is operating as a bit of a "non-profit," which seems to be what you are describing, there are still bills to pay and I guess that 10% is covering that. Unless your husband wants to buy thawed frozen food and shop in the dark, he might want to agree to paying that 10% whether he checks himself out or a cashier does to make sure the coolers are running and the lights stay on. lol

I do not use self-checkout unless I am in a hurry and only have 1 or 2 things. But Tom came home telling me all the problems he had with the self-checkout, and said since they didn't have any cashiers working, they should not charge the 10%...I kind of ran with that idea. But I DO realize that the 10% added at checkout is for not only paying cashiers, but stockers, utilities, etc. Peronally I HATE Self-checkouts.

I don't think I'll shop at a store like that, I just know that at some point my carefully cultivated cynicism will kick in and I will probably be banned anyway. As for a self service fee - its called being self-employed and paying your own wage.

That's crazy, I don't go through the self check out all that often only if I have like 3-4 items & the lines are full that will take too long to get through, but yeah I agree on the 10% extra charge it's not fare to us.

Sounds vulgar to me. I would go elsewhere.
