I stayed in the car while Dixie went to buy some veggies. Little did I know that she would come with half of a giant watermelon. I´m sure that watermelons nowadays are genetically changed. They have smaller seeds and are all so sweet! When I was young getting a good watermelon depended on luck. And there were many theories about what to do to pick a good watermelon. Now all that is changed, as cucumbers and eggplants have changed. Have you noticed that now some veggies are much better than before?

I wonder how they grown new watermelons from the seedless ones.

I had a cousin who grew watermelons. Seedless watermelons are sterile hybrid created by crossing male pollen for a watermelon, containing a very precise number of chromosomes per cell (I forgot the number), with a female watermelon flower

@LadyDuck Thanks for that. It sounds quite a process.

@JudyEv This is the reason why the seedless are more expensive.

Enjoy the watermelon. I hadn't really noticed the change in vegetables.

It is winter here and summer in your side. So watermelon is in the right season there. I think today the farmers have better seeds and planting methods and therefore the result is better than before.

No, to be honest I noticed that all veggies are not as good as before, included those pale tasteless watermelons that we get here.

Homegrown veggies are the best. What we can get in the stores are OK but not much more than OK. Have a good weekend.

Some here still grow the old varieties with the big seeds. That's what I usually buy.
