A problem of Geography in the United States

United States

I have children in my home here in the USA and i am concerned over what is being taught in schools these days. Many schools are not teaching kids the basics when it comes to world geography and how the world works. Based on questions on the likes of Quora and other like websites and information that kids are taught and even adults have the understanding of I am concerned for the lack of world knowledge that Americans have. Many and A very high percentage of them think that a conteniant and a country are one and the same thing. For example, I have had someone ask me where I was from and that ok because I'm not American but when i say i am from New Zealand they ask what state is that from. As if it's bad enough they didn't know that New Zealand was a totally different country they think it's part of the USA. Before coming here to the USA to live with my now wife I would often get asked what country and then had to explain that New Zealand is a country of its own NOT part of Australia or any other country. There is NO bridge you can drive to Australia from like the UK to France or crossing a lake, The distance between New Zealand and Australia is about the same as the distance between Continental USA to the Philippines is a long way. There is a sea called the Tasman Sea that separates the two countries and Australia is a country that makes up a large part of a continent called Australasia or Oceania, not Australia. As of 1992 New Zealand is officially not even part of that continent it is part of its own continent called New Zealandia of which 97 percent of it is underwater. Before New Zealandia sunk it was the 2nd largest continent only beaten out by Asia in its geographical size. So remember Europe is not the same as the European Union and Asia is more than just the Chinese and Japanese many other countries make up the continent. Africa is more than just South Africa it consists of more than 30 other countries with their laws, rules, and governments. So the next time says they are from Africa don't assume they are from South Africa Or if they say they are from Europe don't assume they are from the United Kingdom or worse just because they say they are from the UK, dont assume they are from England. The United Kingdom or UK consists of 4 different countries that are governed by a central government in London the capital of the UK Those countries are England , Scotland , Wales , and Northern Island all answerable to the central government of the United Kingdom in London Much like the USA which has state governments that operate independently however must follow the laws set by the central or the Federal government. Central or Federal government set the minimum standards but state governments can exceed and often do that of the Federal Government. a good example of this is the Federal Minimum wage sets the least any person can be paid legally no matter where they live in the USA, however, the Minimum wage in some states have set those minimum levels at a much higher rate. For example, the federal Minimum wage is $7.25 per hour Other parts have their state minimum wage at $10 per hour or more.

Unfortunately the focus has become math, language arts, and science to the detriment of history, geography, foreign languages, business, and the fine arts.

Public schools are failing children left and right. Private schools cost a lot, but you are much more likely to get a quality education.

It's not just a public vs private education thing @Amber, or rich vs poor. it's a teacher problem in general. I went to a quiz night at a local elementary school and one of the questions was where is the kiwi bird from? the answer according to the book the quiz master was Australia . lol, there are NO kiwis in Australia they are native to New Zealand. When I approached the quiz master and told him this he said "Oh same thing" The teachers themselves have no clue and that says something. You shouldn't be teaching if you are misleading with false information. Moreover, kiwis are only found in the wild in New Zealand every other country that has them is found only in captivity. Ie London Zoo, Sandiego Zoo, Australia Zoo, etc. This is in agreement with the New Zealand government as a breeding program much like what China has with the Pandas around the world, All kiwis birds are property of the New Zealand government and highly protected Blaming it on public education in the USA is a cop out too because people I have spoken to here in the US are from both well-off and poorer backgrounds so education regardless of whether it is public or private is lacking and is intergenerational.

@crobyghost Yes, we do have a teacher problem, most definitely. But private schools still offer better education in general. I went to a couple of private schools, and it did not matter if you were poor (I was). If you wanted to attend, you were allowed to attend. As the schools were located in poor parts of town, most people were poor. The kids who came from public schools were grades behind students who had grown up in that Christian school. Meanwhile, when the kids who had been there years changed to public schools, they ended up skipping grades. Why? Because the education was of much better quality in the the Christian (and private school). The teachers in poor areas (like mine) at public schools are the bottom of the barrel. They pay badly, so those schools get the teachers no one else will hire. Why do less people want to teach? Bad pay, and horribly behaved children. Meanwhile, at the schools I went to, there was zero tolerance for disrespectful behavior. So while our teachers didn’t get paid well (you can’t pay well when you have so many poor students), they knew they were in a safe environment, and the students were not allowed to be disrespectful.

I totally understand you..the ignorance is rife here. They do not know the next street, never mind anything about other nations. More on this later...I feel for you friend.

I know, we lived 31 years in Monte Carlo, when we traveled to the United States and people asked "Where are you from?" and we answered "Monte Carlo" they could never figure out where that place was. Some thought it was part of Spain, others part of France, it is an independent state.

That is not good at all. Children should know geography and see that it can be fun to learn about other countries. Actually if only parents also understood this they could show children how easy it is to learn about other countries through the internet, There are many sites which focus on kids,
