The last time I was in this region of Mississippi, there was no memorial for the victims of the 1977 Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash, which happened outside of Gillsburg. As you can see, there is one now! Mississippi has acknowledged much of its vast music heritage, as there are signs all over the place indicating where certain blues, country, or rock singers were born. (Yes, rock…Tommy Aldridge, who’s played for Whitesnake and Ozzy, is from Mississippi.) There are even monuments to the darkest days in music (such as the Rhythm Club historical marker and museum in Natchez, which I visited in 2021). Now there is one, and it is quite fitting for one of southern rock’s greatest bands. Maybe it’s so good because it was created by a private group, not by the government. There are four monuments on the site, which is near (but not on [that was private property, and still is, with plenty of “posted — no trespassing” signs]) the site. Two on either side tell the story of the crash, while the one in the middle tells the story of the rise of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s popularity. On the back of each monument you’ll find very well-done photo-paintings (you really can’t tell which they are, they’re that good) of the four Skynyrd deaths (three musicians and their tour manager). The survivors are also represented. In the back, closest to the fence marking off the private property from the monument property, is a marker depicting Ronnie Van Zant in his trademark pose of carrying his microphone, stand and all. On the reverse of that monument is a poem by Skynyrd’s security manager (and crash survivor) Gene Odom. I’m so sorry there has to be a memorial, but this one has been done very well. I Always loved this band. Don't matter what they are, right wing conservative, can blast left wing Neil Young all they want. You know what they had in common, both believed in being free as a bird. I think both admit it was over blown, their little tat. That being said I would love to bring this fool back alive and get his take on Trump. I bet he would blast him 10 ways to Sunday on most but he is the southern boy. Trump just a scared baby who needs a pat on the back every once in a while. Edit, Also can you tell ocean she blocked me. Its fine if that is what she wants, but in case of accident. I cannot read what you write on my posts.

I think he’d hate everything…the extreme right wing and the people who call him “racist” because they had rebel flags onstage.

Great Southern band. Glad they honored the memory of this tragic accident, which also changed the band's future makeup. Monuments tell a story, and we can learn from them good and bad. They should never be torn down, destroyed or hidden. They are a blueprint of that time in our history.

Funny you should say that monuments should “never be torn down, destroyed, or hidden,” because one monument I went to see actually was removed (the marker for the Colfax, Louisiana massacre in 1873). Anyway, the subject at hand is Lynyrd Skynyrd, and this is a remarkable tribute. You can tell there was a lot of love poured into this.

@FourWalls Nothing funny about removing or destroying history. Whatever it is.. Yes, really fine work on Skynyrd.

It was good for me to go there. I remember that long, awful night listening to the radio for an update every hour.

Some memorials are a lot better than others. I'm glad this has been done so well.

I agree. There are some that I’ve seen (either in person or online) that are almost laughable in their pathetic presentation.

I know. I’d rather have the band and NO memorial. But as they sang in “You Got That Right,” “you won’t find me in an old folks’ home.”

Glad to hear about the new Lynyrd Skynyrd memorial! It's a great tribute to the band and those lost in the crash. The design sounds thoughtful, with separate sections and impressive artwork. It's a beautiful way to remember their legacy, even if the occasion is somber. Thanks for sharing! Awesome photos too thanks. RIP Saw them and adored them all.

It’s incredibly tasteful. There’s not a 24/7 loop of “Free Bird” playing.
