Is she real?

My friends have a student lodger from China. Apparently she is very clever and already has a degree in physics but is now studying medicine. She is the perfect tenant/guest and speaks near perfect English. Last week she accidentally lost her key to their garage, while my friends were away for the weekend. So she sent a couple of text messages expressing her remorse at this careless accident, explaining that she had engaged the services of a locksmith to replace the key, hoping that she had not caused them distress by her actions, and asking if it would be acceptable for her to borrow her host’s key for the time being until the new key was ready (her actual messages were much longer and in more flowery language than this, but I can’t remember them verbatim, unfortunately). At first I thought perhaps she had used ChatGPT or something similar to write the messages for her. But by the end of the second one I started to think that perhaps she wasn’t human at all! My friends say she does eat and do other normal ‘human’ things like ride a bicycle – although very dangerously – but I’m not convinced. I think perhaps they have been duped into housing a robot! I should have said that the photo is actually of a robot named Jia Jia that (who?) was unveiled in 2016 and was able to hold basic conversations. Undoubtedly things have progressed in the eight years since then. All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2024.

People can surprise you. She very well maybe. If she's from China, then perfection was ingrained into her at a young age. China and Japan are known for their hard standards and their perfectionist nature. As well as their very non-confrontational approach to situations.

That's true, but I have met, worked with and become friends with a number of people from China over the years, as well as others from Japan and Korea. None were quite like this. But then China is a huge country of course!

@Fleura At the end of the day, we're all human. You're going to run into a small few who don't fit into that perfect mold. And, then there are the traditionlists that are the picture perfect example of the culture and its teachings. As we've evolved, such people are the exception, not the rule.

It's getting to that stage where you wonder what's real.

As long as she is not on a spy mission...I think I would be cool with it... Except as far as I know, bots don't feel the need to eat.

But maybe that's all part of the disguise. And then in private she just removes a little bag from an inside compartment.

@JudyEv Would it be harder to create an Aussie robot that would pass for human, I wonder?

I haven't met her yet, I would like to! She's going to be around for a few more months. I should think up some tests!

@Fleura It's probably a culture thing. Now if it had been an Aussie bloke, he would have rung and said 'Yeah, nah, now listen, mate. I've lost me key so I've nicked the spare one out of your office' (so something similar.)

I think she is human. Most Asian are polite and think carefully what to write in a foreign language, in a polite manner.

I don't think she's a robot; but I truly understand the way she acts. Asians are normally very polite and have very high standards. Have a good day.

I think she is more intelligent than a robot. How do your friends feel?

Well that's the thing, is she too perfect to be human? My friends are happy with her. Of course I haven't met her in person.

It sounds like an inconvenience for the friends that she called a locksmith when she lost the key. I've heard about robots that look human. Though I think this one is human, especially if she has a degree in physics.

A robot will be a bit mechanical. However if she is a robot she can put up with her as long as she is not harmful.
