Oh, will today’s song cause a little controversy. In today’s terms, it sounds like imprisonment; however, remember this was back in the days of “innocent” rock and roll, not the terrible things we think of now. So enjoy this trip to the past as we celebrate songs with “live” or “living” in the title. Living Doll - Cliff Richard More clarification: the record label had this as “Cliff Richard and the Drifters.” NO, not the “Up on the Roof” Drifters. In fact, they shortly thereafter changed their names to the Shadows to avoid the confusion. Now, for the line about locking his “living doll” in a trunk, take it in the context of a toy, NOT “gonna stuff my woman in a box and keep her there.” I’m sure this would be banned these days, but in 1959 it was just a fun song. (We aren’t talking Steve Miller’s “I’m gonna get me a whip, I’m gonna teach you to skip, and you’ll learn to dig it, baby” here.) And, for you trivia buffs, this was one of the earliest hits by a British singer in the rock era. (Vera Lynn had topped the US popular charts with “Auf Wiederseh’n, Sweetheart” in 1952, so Cliff Richard was hardly the first.) In America, Cliff Richard is probably best remembered for his 1976 hit “Devil Woman” (which was a great song to roller skate to!), but in England, he’s Sir Cliff Richard, knighted for his long career in music. Living Doll Written by Lionel Bart Recorded by Cliff Richard Released as a single, 1959 Got to do my best to please her:

Interesting take on "Living Doll"! Sounds like a fun song for a bygone era. Looking forward to hearing it! I remember Cliff very well as at the time I was living in England. He was hit after hit there.

I loved that song and I loved Cliff Richards back then. You always have to put everything in context of course. Nowadays young men can´t even compliment a woman. Years ago, I gave a birthday party with costumes. Men here don´t much like to dress up (or didn´t then). So I said that women must be dressed up and men MUST compliment them

I get funny looks because I’m an old southerner and we were taught to say “ma’am” and “sir,” so I don’t know if I’m actually saying “ma’am” to someone who identifies as a guy! Cliff’s had some great music in his career.

I have heard of Cliff and seem to think I have heard this song before, I remember there was some kind of kooky TV show called My Living Doll that did not do so well,

This was top of the pops in my era. So many of those old songs would be viewed with suspicion nowadays. Such a shame.

I remember someone on here asking about why these “creepy guys” were singing about 16-year-olds, and I had to tell them that, in those days, rock and roll was by teenagers for teenagers. Cliff’s had a great career.

Yeah, Cliff’s voice is superb. I love how he goes from soft to powerhouse in “Power to All Our Friends.”

I think he was very popular everywhere except the U.S. I’m pretty sure it doesn't bother him any that he never “made it big” here.
