Have You Heard of Saint Osburg?

United Kingdom

I have been writing a set of articles about Catholic saints and their feast days. The most recent one is about saints whose feast days fall in March. Some of the saints are quite well-known, others are more obscure. I have found some more interesting than others. The last one for my March saints is Osburg (Osburh, Osburga). I was already aware of a church and a school dedicated to her. They are not far from where I live. The surprising thing here was discovering that there is nothing else dedicated to this saint. She is very specific to the city of Coventry in the West Midlands region of England. There are other saints who are more closely linked to a certain place. For example, Saint Chad is quite prominent in some areas of the West Midlands. He is, however, known in other places. When researching Osburg, I was quite surprised to find nothing of her outside of a single city (which was only a tiny settlement when Osburg's remains were enshrined there). This information fascinated me. I am fascinated by such things. My husband and I have been watching a 90s TV show called Millennium. At the beginning of each episode, they show a quote or a Bible verse. It was interesting that the quotes all seemed to be from British authors (despite Millennium being an American show) but it was a little different when a quote came up from George Eliot. You may have heard of her, I don't know how famous she is in the rest of the world. For us, it was because she is very local to us. My husband and I (and my children) were all born at her namesake hospital. I also got unnecessarily excited when I discovered one of my favourite actors was also born there (although he grew up elsewhere). We have similar feelings watching shows where we recognise places because we've been there! One thing that bothers me, however, is that the most famous person from the town where I live a) is not actually from the town and b) is someone that most people who know him would prefer not to be associated with! Do you find you get excited when you see things and people that are from your neck of the woods? Is there anything interesting about where you live? Do you know of any other places that have a saint all to themselves?

Saints Patrick and Brigid are well known outside of Ireland. Saint Patrick is also patron saint of Nigeria and Montserrat.

I am sure you will be interested to know that Osburg is a municipality in the Trier-Saarburg district, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. While Osburh or Osburga was the first wife of King Æthelwulf of Wessex and mother of King Alfred the Great. A

I did not know about the place and you are right that I did find that interesting. However, I did know about the wife of Æthelwulf, but I don't think she was a saint. I only knew about her as there were some search results about her while I was researching Saint Osburg.

There are too many saints it seems. Here 'devotees' often celebrate the Name Day so they pay attention to the calendar and the Saint of the Day. Some look for baby names there so they can be sure their child is named after a saint and can celebrate. I have a middle name according to the Catholic Church but it isn't official, I simply was baptized with two names because at the time my mother didn't know about any Saint Sabrina. I don't know anyone whose name is Osburh, but good to know it exists.

There are a lot of saints. Well over 10,000 according to Brittanica. Each day has multiple saints. I have just now discovered that there is a saint with my name!

I should think it's quite easy to find things that show NYC. There are many things I've seen set there.

It's fascinating to learn and know about such things. My husband's native place is Ranchi and our famous cricket star MS Dhoni comes from that place. He feels a very strong connection whenever he is on field. I come from a college with strong alumini. There are many celebrities who were my batchmates and I feel good seeing and hearing about them.

I have never heard of that cricketer, but then I have no interest in cricket! I love to see people doing well, so I guess seeing them as celebrities would be similar to being successful in any other way.

I've never heard of Saint Osburg. We have a lot of interesting things in our area -- Lake Erie, the Browns, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, etc. I hope you have a good week.
