How far we've fallen

A disclaimer: I'm too often guilty of this myself. Not so long ago, if we really cared that you were sick or just wanted to see you, we'd go for a visit. Nothing like a hug and to show our love in person. But if we couldn't, whether you lived a thousand miles away or just down the road, a phone call was the next best thing. We can often tell by the sound of someone's voice how they really are. And if we were just too busy to call, a card was of course enough. And very thoughtful. But cards take a lot of effort. You have to go to a store, pick one out, buy a stamp, write two lines that express your love, then mail it... So if a card is just not doable, you can always send a quick text. Now, a text does take a few seconds to type, so if you really are awfully busy, a GIF is the ultimate show of love and concern. Prayers are of course the best, but not the only way to show we care. True love takes effort. God help us all.

I remember writing tome letters to my friends and pen pal back in the day. Now I don't even get a thank you note from someone for a shower or wedding gift. It's sad.

It really is too bad. No one is taught manners any longer.

@1creekgirl Yes, I'm afraid good manners have fallen by the wayside.

It’s funny you say that. I was at the post office yesterday, and was told someone who lived in a Carolina area should be getting a card in 3 to 4 days.

You read that Carolina girl's mind, didn't you. I wish everyone, including myself, was as thoughtful as you.

@1creekgirl That’s very sweet, and thank you. I certainly have my moments of neglect though.

Yep yep yep - that seems to be the way of the world these days. Sigh. And the thing is, texting is something anyone can do in a second . . . so there should be NO excuse for not sending some thoughtful words/GIF. But even that seems to be a stretch for some.

@1creekgirl Those ladies were so thoughtful and generous . That must've really warmed your heart . I don't know how people have gotten so far removed from being kind to each other. Everything seems so impersonal now . . . maybe that's why there are more sad and depressed folks these days . . . there's less of a feeling that others actually care.

@much2say I think you're absolutely right. We were so surprised when that church did all that for us. I'll never forget their kindness.

We can send a text mentioning that we're thinking of them and that they are in our prayers since a visit these days is not always possible with all the viruses that are making people sick.

@1creekgirl It's kind of sad but it is no fun when we get sick.

That's true, so many conditions require isolation.

I still don't have a way to send a text. We were fortunate when we both got so sick. A very down to earth and kind lady came over and made sure we had what we needed. She also has taken on the job of picking up litter in our town. Very nice person. Old fashioned and solid.

That's good to know there are still people like her. That meant a lot to y'all.

Times have changed so much over the years. Many of the old customs have gone by the board.

Some of those changes have not been for the better, I don't think.

@JudyEv I think manners are not being taught in many homes these days.

@1creekgirl Certainly we could do with a few more manners and consideration for others to start with.

I don't think we've fallen. I think we're adapting to the world we live in. Our world has changed. It's more demanding of our time. Far to fast paced. But, what would expect? Since the dawn of time. With the eveulation of humankind, we've always strived to make our lives easier. I'm just as happy to send a text message, as I am going to the store, and getting a card. Hell, George told me his sister (my sister-in-law) sent us a card. She also texted me on Easter Sundy. If I'm honest, sending a card, making a phone call, or sending a text message all take the same ammount of thought. Same with a phone call. Now a days, when you pick up a phone, you can either call a contact or text them.

I think that one small text is doable if we really care for someone. Even if we have a busy day, we all can take 1 minute or 2 just to ask someone if he is doing alright or say something nice

You are so right. A text is the very least we can do for someone.

If love someone keep him or her in prayers, watch out for them by call or text. Sometimes we don't know the positive effect of a fervent prayer from our love ones.

I guess texts are better than no concern at all, but if we can't see someone in person, a phone call is good.
