Guests staying later than expected, what would you do?

Today the weather was lovely, it was sunny and warm. It was a long day at work and I came home very tired. In the evening my daughter invited her friend over and they did some painting and puzzles. My daughter's friend is older and doesn't have school during the Easter break. I was waiting for her mom to pick her up and she came so late, just before 9.30pm. Then my daughter was overtired, she should have been in bed by 9pm. We need to get up very early in the morning and everyone is sleeping now. I finally have some time to relax and catch up with the discussions in Mylot. Has it ever happened to you, to have guests that stay longer than expected?

Occasionally we have guests who stay a bit too long but hopefully it meant they were enjoying the evening.

Yes same happened with the girls, they had so much fun! They did a couple of paintings each and my daughter's friend took hers to hang them in her room. The only one complaining was me!

It would be the best thing to do but I don't have her number, the kid is from our neighborhood. I sent my husband to their house, the car was not there and there was no one home.

I don't know about that. Though I do know I had a friend who once asked me if my husband was comming to get me.

After I wrote the discussion, I realised I have possibly overstayed too,, in more than one instances. But you can't be sure!

I often encounter this situation. We have to sympathize. Because we have guests from time to time, right?

Yes we've all done it, it seems like I am the only one compalining, because I was tired and it was unplanned. My daughter had lots of fun and talking about her friend all day.

I would have put it clear when she left her daughter there that she had to come to get her daughter before 9 pm. Usually our guests are polite and never stay longer than they are expected to stay.

I wasn't expecting that to be honest, her daughter said she wil come for an hour and then her mom will pick her up. It happened in a strange way and I never saw her mom, she lives in the neighborhood and the girl went in her house to get her permission for the playdate. But then the mom must have left, because the car wasnt there, I sent my husband over to see why they didn't come yet.

@besweet It has happened with me too;and I know what it means when guests stay at your home for more time. But I somehow manage to be patient. It's very difficult.

I think it's something that has happened to most, I was patient too. It's a responsibility to take care of a child though , with adults it's different. Anyway it seems like everyone else was happy and only I was comlaining!

Well my daughter was having fun so we just waited for her to come. Imagine if they were fighting and we couldn't find her mom, it would be difficult then!

I'm afraid I might be the late person, we're not a very early-to-bed household. And of course if you didn't see her mother before then you didn't get a chance to talk about what time might be appropriate. If you see her again maybe you could let her know that your daughter needs to go to bed earlier.

I know what you mean, when we go to other people's homes for playdates my daughter doesnt want to leave, she doesn't care about bed time at all. The girl talked with her mother and she was going to pick her up in one hour. I said it was fine, however she came after 2 hours. She was probably stuck somewhere because their car wasn't home.

Yes, some guests stay longer. I try to accept this because sometimes we were guests and we stayed longer than we should have. But we don't have guests often.

I suffered after the girl left honestly, because my daughter was overtired and everything was a struggle until she slept. Next day she was so happy about the playdate that I felt bad complaining about the time.
