Hummingbird painting - Work in progress.

Because we've all got colds at the moment, my Mum and step-dad didn't go out for a meal at the Dr Johnson pub. I didn't feel like putting all my painting equipment out on the dining room table, and then putting it away again to get it out again after dinner, so I decided to just paint in my bedroom instead. I've made enough room on my desk where I can paint, even though it is a bit cramped. So I started on the hummingbird painting. I painted the background in amethyst. I used neat amethyst at the top, then further down used amethyst mixed with white. I painted the edges too, as it was a box canvas, but I left the bottom until all the rest was dry because of ledging it on my desktop easel. I left that to dry and went and got myself some lunch. When I came back from lunch I started on the wings using white with a touch of pale purple in places. I used more purple on the smaller right hand wing. I went and googled how to mix burgundy for the body. So I mixed two parts red to one part blue and made a lovely shade of burgundy. I painted the body with that and then I painted some of the head black. While that was drying I went on to paint the stems in burnt sienna and then added burnt umber. I thought there'd be more of a light dark contrast between them, but there's not so much, so I think I might have to go back over part of it with yellow ochre for more of a contrast. The lighter stem was achieved by adding white to burnt sienna. Then I decided I was nearly finished for the day, so I just painted the bottom edge in with amethyst mixed with white, and turned the painting upside down for it to dry. As I'm still not feeling well enough to go down town shopping tomorrow, I'll probably do some more to it then. What have you lot been getting up to today? I hope you are all well. Have a great night.

It looks great, Sharon! I haven’t done much else today besides clean. I’m still waiting for a delivery that was supposed to come at 2pm, but now it is 7:52pm. I got a notification they are still coming, but who wants to deliver anything this late?

@sharonelton They came at 9:15 last night, but they put the package at the neighbors who live below me. I walked myself down there, and got it myself. Annoying, but at least it got here. Honestly, I think the delivery man just didn’t want to climb the stairs to my apartment.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you think so. I know the feeling of having to wait for a parcel and they keep changing the time it should be coming. One time I had one and it ended up saying it was due 8:00pm-10:00pm. Then it didn't come and they said it was now due the following day! It was snowing at the time, so I guess they had an excuse. The parcel did come the following day.

@AmbiePam That's annoying and inconvenient. Surely the delivery man knows the walk will do him good? At least you got it.

Ah, thank you very much, that is very kind of you. I'm glad you like it. Thank you very much. I hope so too. My nose doesn't seem to be running as much now, but the cough is still bad. Thank you. I hope you achieved what you wanted to with that and enjoyed your time doing it.

I was sure it would have looked great, good job. My husband had to bring our car at the annual check, so I went with him. On our way back home I stopped at Lidl to buy a few things and then we came home.

It's starting to look good. I haven't painted birds in a long time. I've been busy decluttering our house. I'll probably be able to paint again properly once we move to a bigger apartment.

Thank you very much, I'm glad you think so. I've been trying to declutter a bit too. I have managed to take 2 out of 3 bags of DVDs and CDs to the Oxfam book shop. I hope you can get to paint again soon.

@sharonelton Oh, yes, the CDs and DVDs. I've yet to find a place or a shop that can take them. We've got lots here too. I can't concentrate on a piece when I know I've got spaces to clean and stuff to clear. I'm really hoping to paint again before April ends because I'm applying for a participation in an exhibit this September and the application is only until April 30th. They're accepting small samples for now but I might need to turn in a bigger painting to qualify as a participating or a competing artist.

@almostoveryou Don't you have an Oxfam book shop near you? Maybe you could do a garage or car boot sale? Oh, wow! That sounds wonderful! I hope you can get some paintings done in time.

Thank you very much. My runny nose seems a lot better so.now all I've got to contend with is this dratted cough! Thank you very much, I'm glad you think so. I was going to continue it today but now I don't feel like it, so I might try to finish it tomorrow or Monday.

Your painting is beautiful. Today I have been recovering from thyroid cancer surgery which was yesterday. I am grateful to be home and feeling better than I had expected.
