When I started this monthlong musical celebration of my birthday I said I’ve started going back to the 50s because the sound was definitely changing come 1954. There will be lots of proof of that as we go along. For instance, here’s today’s rockin’, jumpin’ song that’s now 70 years old.
I Got a Woman - Ray Charles
Yeah, this is dated thematically (“she knows a woman’s place is right there in her home”), but dang what a great song.
Brother Ray took the foundation of a gospel song and turned it into a Saturday night romp. Elvis subsequently recorded it, and the Beatles did it live early in their career.
One of the songs that fired the rock and roll shot heard round the world.
I Got a Woman
Written by Ray Charles and Renald Richard
Recorded by Ray Charles
Released as a single, 1954

I don't know if this is the version I remember; but it's Ray Charles; so it's OK. Have a good day.

Slokay. At least you have heard of the singers. That’s a major advance for me.
