Keys

While watching some police drama today, keys were featured in it as part of the clues. As I looked at a closeup view of the keys on the screen, it hit me. Of all the different styles of keys that can be made and cut for our various locks, there is not an infinite number of cuts. That would mean that in other places there are keys cut the same way our keys are cut. Hopefully not anywhere in the same general areas. Hopefully in different states. But I do wonder, just how many cuts can be made on the same style of key without eventually being duplicated.

With apartment I think it would be easy to have the same key fit into different apartments.

I think it would be thousands of variations, so maybe not apartment buildings. But I think large cities probably have duplicates, and one state to another state...has to be duplicated cuts.

For what I have read in the past there are thousands of variations. I do not believe it's very common to find a key that can open another entry door here. With the old cars it was a lot more common. I remember we opened the car of my Dad with our keys the day he closed the door and left the key inside.

I agree. You would think that at some point keys would be duplicated.

Hopefully there aren't duplicates in the same area.
