Let’s see, this week we’ve had disco-ish, hard rocking Queen, Elvis, and Elton. Where else can we go? Hey, back in 1974 you could go anywhere your heart desired. It was a wonderful blend of things, where you’d have John Denver on the radio after an Alice Cooper song. So it’s no surprise that this look back 50 years moves us to this gentleman. Longfellow Serenade - Neil Diamond Teenager quotes Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to an older woman and “gets lucky.” That was supposedly a real event in Neil Diamond’s life. So he got sex and a great song out of it! I’m so sorry that Diamond has had to retire from performing because of Parkinson’s disease. His career is long and, for the most part (we’ll ignore “Heartlight” ), brilliant. I just can’t figure out why a New York City boy has one of his songs used by the Boston Red Sox. Longfellow Serenade Written by Neil Diamond Recorded by Neil Diamond From Serenade, 1974 I loved her as none before:

Some of these songs make much more sense when you know the background. Eric Bogle always tells how a song came into being and/or what it is about and it does help you understand it more.

If Neil told the backstory in concert a lot then there was probably a rush on Longfellow poetry collections in the mid-70s.

It’s funny how songs are big hits in some parts of the world and unknown in other parts. Anyway, I’m glad you like it.
