Ahhh. We had a little front move through yesterday, and it’s noticeably nicer today. Hot dog! Let’s celebrate a momentary reprieve from the heat with a hot song from 1964. What a great tune that’s now 60 years old! Sing along!
#7: Suspicion - Terry Stafford
By 1964 Beatlemania was the big thing. So naturally someone comes along and gets a big hit…by sounding like Elvis.
Funny thing: Elvis actually recorded this first! It was on his 1962 album Pot Luck, but not released as a single. Two years later, everyone was buying this, thinking it was Elvis…to the point where RCA released Elvis’ version as a single! But DJs played the B-side, “Kiss Me Quick,” more…I guess because Elvis sounding like the guy who sounded like Elvis wasn’t too cool.
While Terry Stafford never had another big pop hit, he did make a splash in country music, as a songwriter. In fact, two songs he wrote are on my 100 favorites list: George Strait’s “Amarillo By Morning,” and Buck Owens’ “Big in Vegas” (which Stafford originally did as “Big in Dallas”).
Stafford died of liver failure at the age of 54 in 1996. He left some great songs as a songwriter, and this classic hit.

Elvis’ version never got noticed in America until after the Terry Stafford version. Weird, isn’t it.

I think I have heard of this song. Probably the version was by Elvis.

Internationally, I’m sure Elvis got more attention.
