By Hook or by Crook

Our son in Ireland attended a conference in Waterford, Ireland and told us that he'd been past Hook Lighthouse on a boat tour. The tour guide told them that the lighthouse is the world’s oldest operational lighthouse although Wikipedia says it is the second oldest operational lighthouse. It was built 800 years ago and some of the walls are up to 4 metres thick. The upper tier originally supported the beacon fire. This was later replaced by a coal-burning lantern in 1671. In 1791, a whale-oil lantern was installed, followed by gas lights in 1871. 1911 saw the use of paraffin oil and a clockwork mechanism which had to be wound every 35 minutes. Finally in 1972, electrical power was installed. Throughout its life, a variety of methods were used during periods of fog to warn shipping. The lighthouse also features in the phrase ‘By Hook or by Crook’ which was supposedly spoken by Cromwell. He is said to have stated that that area of Ireland would be conquered 'by Hook or by Crook'. Hook Head is where the lighthouse stands and Crook is a small village on the opposite side of the channel. I started off to talk about the saying by hook or by crook but got carried away by the story of the lighthouse. I hope you enjoyed reading about it anyway! The photo is mine of a lighthouse at Cape Naturaliste in Western Australia.

I love hearing about your history discussions! It’s a great way to learn about things I may have never come across otherwise. I love lighthouses, especially historic ones that are still in operation.

I didn't think your lighthouse looked 800 years old... But I'm reminded of that song that goes, "I want to marry a lighthouse keeper, and keep him company..." I think it was used in the movie Clockwork Orange. Or maybe I'm hallucinating again.

@JudyEv The song or the movie? I think the movie does, but it's been so long since I saw it.

I didn't see that film and don't particularly want to. I know Rolf Harris' song about a lighthouse keeper. It should have some sort of warning on it.

@BarBaraPrz The songs a bit risque although perhaps not be today's standards.

@JudyEv I'd love to walk on a covered bridge. I never have. I love wooden pedestrian bridges.

@sallypup Stone bridges are lovely too. We saw a lot in Ireland. Some are very old and not really built for modern traffic.

The covered bridges you have there are amazing. Do you mean them or just bridges in general?

I have used that phrase ever so often but never knew the history behind it. Connecting it to a lighthouse built years ago - tell me another (lol)

It is a good looking lighthouse that you shared in the post. I love the story, sometimes when we write our plans change and something else takes over, and turns out to be just as great.

Lighthouses have an air of romance about them but it was probably a very lonely life for the keeper and his family.

Growing up when someone says " by hook or by crook" it means that whatever has to be done will be done - whether by legal or illegal means.

That's an interesting story about the lighthouse. Reminds me of Peggy Cove's Lighthouse in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is a tourist attraction. I've lived in Nova Scotia for some time. I loved to visit the Lighthouse once in a while.
