) For those of you who know me, you’re wondering what’s wrong that this isn’t #1. I know. Happy 60th birthday to this great country classic.
#2: I Guess I’m Crazy - Jim Reeves
Yes, Gentleman Jim is taking a back seat to someone else in this list of 1964 songs. What a shock.
This was released in June, 1964, about six weeks before Reeves’ untimely death in a plane crash at the end of July. The tragedy no doubt helped this song stay at #1 for seven weeks. It was also the first #1 song on the RPM Magazine chart in Canada, and it made the easy listening top 20.
As for why Jim Reeves was, is, and ever shall be my favorite singer…just listen to him deliver the line “I don’t dare let you go.” Oooh.
