The Texas Way

The signs at the border say, “Welcome to Texas. Drive safe, drive friendly, the Texas way.” Most Texans will tell you that you either have to drive safe and friendly OR the “Texas way,” but you cannot do both! I had a blast in Texas on my trip earlier this year, so for July we’re going back to Texas…musically, of course. I’m sure you already know who the top four are, because I’m just not that unpredictable. What may, however, shock you is that a number of my favorite “Texan singers” won’t be on the list. Why? Because they weren’t BORN in Texas. That’s right Jerry Jeff Walker (born in Buffalo, NY), Steve Miller (born in Milwaukee), Boz Scaggs (born in Canton, Ohio), and J.D. Souther (born in Detroit) might have Texas roots and Texas in their soul, but they weren’t born there. To make this list, they must have been born within the 268,500 or so square miles that make up the Lone Star State. Along the way you may see some surprises, and the “usual” people show up. The teaser might surprise you, for instance. The late Billy Preston, the “fifth Beatle,” was born in Houston on September 2, 1946. Here’s his hit “Will It Go Round in Circles.”

My friend told me he had a blast in Dallas. He is off in the head though. Most places are famous for having people famous that were not really from there. What makes America neat or did, now it seems like stick to your own land or you a jerk.

You should write about how Billy Preston first met the Beatles when they were unknowns and forge a friendship with the band. This could explain why he is the only musician given credit on a Beatle label. Don't leave us hanging. What is the Texas way of driving?

The only places I have been in Texas are the DFW airport, and through the panhandle area on 66.

I’ve been across it on 30/20 from Texarkana to El Paso. And a lot of other places.

Billy Preston continued to record and perform with George Harrison after the Beatles band stopped being together.

He was probably bigger as a session man than as a solo artist. The one I find humorous is that he played on a Barbra Streisand album…like she needed soul?!
