Texas Musicians: Lyle Lovett

A two-for-one day today…I’m not only eating, I’m getting a tire fixed. I noticed a roofing nail in a tire yesterday, so it was no shock when the low pressure light came on. Fortunately, one of my favorite lunch hangouts is right next to a tire place.
You, on the other hand, get another great Texas performer. Linda? NO! and here we go!
Lyle Lovett
Ooh, he’s a nice guy. (And yeah, he’s not pretty.) Seen him a few times, met him a few times…love me some Lyle.
One of the great things about Lovett is that he’s pretty hard to categorize. The first time I saw him was with his “large band,” where he did half straight-up country music and half almost-jazz. I had a mix tape of rock, and his song “You Can’t Resist It” fit very nicely on it, sound-wise.
While Lovett is probably best-known for his un-pretty looks and for marrying Julia Roberts, his fans love his songwriting style that’s funny (“She’s Hot to Go”), sad (“Walk Through the Bottomland”), and pure Texas (“That’s Right [You’re Not From Texas]”). He’s toured with his large band, and with John Hiatt and two guitars, showing his command in both settings.
Fun fact: Lovett is a lifelong member of the Lutheran church. He’s not the kind of guy people would be crashing a service to meet, though.
However, you can find videos online of him singing in his church’s choir.
Just another aspect of the tapestry that is this great Texas singer/songwriter.
Lyle Lovett
Born Lyle Pearce Lovett
November 1, 1957, Houston (age 67)
HALLS OF FAME: Austin City Limits; Cowboy
Here’s “If I Had a Boat,” one that NJ Chic knows because Jimmy Buffett covered it:

I really like Lyle Lovett, but most of his music I'm not familiar with. Julia Roberts? They make a great pair:)

@FourWalls I think Julia is remarried and she seems to be doing OK.

Oh, I don't know... I think he's kinda cute, in a teddy bear sort of way... and yes, I do love me some Lyle, too.

If you get a photo from the right side he’s nice looking enough (see the screen grab).

I’ve always found him quite the gifted singer and songwriter. Glad you liked his quirkiness.

I have to agree. Of course I do, or he wouldn’t be on the list!

I never listened to him. The only time I paid any attention to him was when he married Julia Roberts for a short time.

That’s when he got a lot of attention outside of the music world.

He’s not as “acquired” a taste as someone like Tom Waits, but I know he has his “odd” side.

He was married to her, but I think they divorced before the newspapers hit the stand with the wedding information.
Surprised you haven’t heard Buffett’s cover:

I used to listen to Lyle on country radio stations growing up, but it's been a while. Thanks for reminding me of him.

Can’t believe he’ll be on the 40-year-old song list in a couple of years….
