I remember during the mid to late 1970's when I was a teenager, we used to hang around with friends in front of out house just talking and telling stories and jokes. Not loudly and no one complained. Twenty years later when my boys were around the same age, we lived in the same county but different area. My two boys and just a couple of friends were standing outside in front of our house while I was fixing dinner, so it was earlier then when my sister and I used to. I looked out the front window and saw a police car outside and they were talking to my boys and friends. I went out and asking the police was there a problem and he asked me were these my kids. I told him, "These two are ,why?" He then said, "You need to take them inside they cannot be standing out here like this." I said" Why? Like what? They are just talking to friends." He then said with a total serious look on his face," Well it looks like a gang" I explained to him about how we did the same thing in the same county and I was told, times had changed. Two or three times a week the boys had baseball practice with their little league teams and usually a game on Saturday. And a boy scout meeting once a week and an even two times a month or so. Some police officers came to our door about two weeks later asking if I had kids and what they do and I told this to them and I was asked on the alternate days they are invited to come to the recreation room in the townhouse community to socialize because it is not good for them to stay inside and watch TV or play video games. I explained to them why I was laughing and they said, "Oh!, well they are welcome."

Oh! That's surprising. Seems like time has really changed. We still have teenagers and young children ganging up here in our apartment complex.

Make's sense! They were not on my porch, my porch wasn't big enough. They were standing on the sidewalk in front of my house and it was about dinner time not as late as we used to and we were standing on the edge of the street because didn't have a sidewalk.

@dfollin I would admit that older times were much better for children and youth. World outside was safer place. Neighborhood worked like a community and there were more human interactions to learn the nuances of life. Many little joys of life have been lost to the technological advancements and fast paced life.

Wow sounds like your boys and those kids kept very busy but having a community house to go up was definitely a nice offer. They don’t have anything like that here.

It was not a community house , it was a townhouse basement that was under the rental office and it was only open for about two hours on weekdays only.

@shaggin Yes, however there was not a lot of space and the kids could come and go as they please. The elementary school that was right next door, had an after school and before school program that that was priced based on the parents income. It was like school attendance, unless you were absent you had to be at the after school program unless a parent called and said otherwise. It included activities, homework assistance and a snack. It was not that way at the recreation program.

That is shocking! Where is the problem if teenagers meet and stay outside talking? I see teenagers doing this all the time here. Of course NOT after 10 p.m. because is silent time.

In this day and age I would not want my kids standing around outside, What with drive-by shootings in big cities and other unusual happenings once it got dark I would want them inside, Of course, in days gone by things were different,

This was about the early 1990's and like I said it was dinner time, it was not dark. They were in front of our house.
