Do you think the news makes things seem worse than they are?

If you knew Chicago only from the news video I'll attach, you'd think that people were running around murdering each other everywhere. In reality, most days are quiet, just like they are everywhere else. This news report starts with a shooting right where I was for my high school reunion a couple of months ago. Yeah, it happens even near the University of Chicago. But things were chill while I was there, even on 51st Street where I stayed, near a park known for drug dealing. Do you watch the news? Do you agree that the news can give us false impressions of what places are like? Photo is of the B and B I stayed at in Chicago.

I do not watch the news. FDR once said “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Apparently the media knows this and preys upon people with that. They’re more fear mongers than news reporters.

@LeaPea2417 — I have a lot of peace by eliminating that poison from my daily diet.

My Calvin and Hobbes funnies book deals with that. It's next to my throne.

I think that might be true of some subjects. Shootings scare me. I don't listen to our local news anymore but I do get a newsletter in my email.

@celticeagle I'd think it would hurt. Or at least be distracting.

No I don't watch the news. I do try to catch up on current affairs a bit though every day, listening to the radio or looking online. But constant news is enough to make anyone depressed. News is almost always bad unless it's some great achievement such as visiting Mars. 'Nothing much happened today and everyone went about their lives as usual' isn't 'news' is it?

I chuckled. I wonder if SNL ever did a skit like that. "Well, Jane, nothing of substance happened today. Ms. Brown did forget to pick up her dog's poop. She was distracted by a garbage truck going by..."

@TheHorse Oh don't forget someone's cat went missing or got stuck up a tree. And somebody parked in the no-parking zone.

Our news gives a very good picture of what life is like in Cleveland. There's a lot of crime. Have a good day.

@TheHorse We live about 40 miles east of Cleveland now. Along the Lake Erie shores in Cleveland are many "mansions" which are fun to look at.

I am going to reiterate the words of @LouAvul in this comment. She stole my thunder and nailed it. Nuff said, so no need to further expand, other than to guarantee that your penny from me is earned nonetheless. lol

@TheHorse Crap. Then you're too late. I think she deleted it already and I forgot what she said. Hmm. Maybe next time I will copy and paste it since I know she's going to do that.

Well, they overglamourize and over exaggerate some of the crimes. It installs fear in most readers or viewers. But it help them to increase circulation or their ratings. They senstalize things to a degree that reading front page has come down to mere seconds .Plus the crime stories could substitute for less news stories especially when there are less things to report. And this is the scenario across the globe.

Most of what really happens is pretty mundane. But pretty sweet.
