Yes, we’ve had rock and funk, and now it’s time for COUNTRY. Of course, when you think of Texas, you probably think of country music…and that will be the rule rather than the exception for the rest of the month. (Sorry, Linda.
) Some famous, some obscure…and this one is definitely famous. Here’s today’s Texan.
George Strait
And for you newcomers, YES, I do have Sly & the Family Stone AND George Strait on my iPod. As I frequently say, my brother is afraid to ride in my car NOT because of my driving, but because of my music tastes.
King George. Not THE King of Country Music (that’s Roy Acuff), but only Eddy Arnold and the other George (Jones) have a better track record on the charts than Strait does. I haven’t seen a recent Whitburn, so Strait may have overtaken Jones. (Eddy Arnold’s feats on the charts, such as when he was the only person with a #1 hit for nearly two and a half years straight, are hard to beat.)
And heck, if you don’t know a song by him (remember, NJ Chic, he was on a Jimmy Buffett record, so don’t give me that nope
), you still know the name. As ubiquitous as he has been over the past 45 years (that’s right, he’s still having hits after 45 years), he’s hard to miss.
He’s one of the greats in country music history.
George Strait
Born George Harvey Strait
May 18, 1952, Pearsall (age 72)
HALL OF FAME: Country Music

Not totally dry on rock, but you’ll enjoy the few islands in this country stream coming up. I’ll do “rock and roll” songs next month for you.

I saw him live in 1985, great show, very friendly with the audience, and country to the core.

One of the guys who set me straight after I went off country because all the old country stars were opting out like Johnny Cash, There are others I discovered too,

I don’t think anyone else will come along and rescue country music this time, though.
