He Knew He Had Spiders

I remember when I was in pest control, I had a client who complained of having spiders in his finished basement. "No, problem," I told him. "I can take care of that for you." After some time, he came down to check on me, and saw I had pulled a drain cover off in his laundry room on the floor. He seemed perplexed. "The webs are up there, by the window," he said, "And over here in this corner." He knew he had spiders. In his mind, the spiders were the problem. He could see them, he knew they were there, and he wanted them gone. It was that simple. Just kill the spiders, right? But does that really make the spiders go away? I mean, sure. The ones I kill today definitely won't return. But what about after that? Won't more just come? "The problem," I told my client, "is not that you have spiders. The problem is why are they here in the first place?" In other words, the spiders were in his basement because there was something there for them to eat. Find the food source, and take it away, and the spiders will go somewhere else or die from starvation. The key here was to observe the webs and see what was in them. I saw drain flies trapped in the gluey death traps. It always illustrated to me how many people fail to see the bigger picture, let alone consider it. Many people fail to think deeper or understand things. Problems we face in our lives are often dealt with in similar fashion. The spiders were the symptom. But the problem was the dirty drains. Sometimes we have to look beyond just what we can see and look for what we can't. At the things that are below the surface and more important to find if we want real solutions. Because the reality is that the real problems we have are not going to be as obvious as a load of cobwebs with spiders lurking in them. In order to find real solutions, we need more details and a keener sense.

I wish we could get rid of the ants and mice. We get them every year at the same time. Yuck! I agree with what you said about more details to find the real solution. Have a good day.

@porwest The mice better have their purpose in someone else's house.

@LindaOHio lol. I hear ya. Incidentally, I saw a funny video today wherein a husband saw a big spider on the counter and was going to smash it with a hammer. His wife came in and stopped him and told him, "No. You don't kill these things. You RELOCATE them." He watched in horror as she retrieved a translucent bowl, put it upside down over the spider and slipped a piece of paper underneath to hold it inside as she took it outside... To a fiery pit in her backyard with a sign that said, "Hell."

Very good points you make here. My Mum always follwed a trail of ants back to their nest and dealt with that, rather than the ants themselves.

Makes sense.

Good idea. If you don't get the nest, you really accomplish nothing. It's why ant baits are effective. It's a slow kill that gives them time to get the poison to the source.

I get scared of spiders, but I also know they are good with killing insects. Except that mosquitos and flies are usually on the air most of the time.

They say that there's always a spider within six feet of you in you're in a building. You're right. One has to look beyond the obvious. In every field.

@porwest Heh. Kitty's pesky raccoon friends were so bold they'd try to drag her bag of dry food out the sliding glass door. I removed their "food source" to the kitchen. They still visit, but for shorter periods of time.

Bugs of all kinds are everywhere. Some days I don't think we live amongst them. They live amongst us. They certainly outnumber us.

As I was reading this I was listening to truex on NRC talking about the boarder & believe it or not they BOTH fall together on how to fix the problem, how ironic.

Yes, you are right. You find to find the source of the problem.

There are so many issues in the world like this. We try to treat the symptoms rather than actually find the root causes, and it's part of the reason few of these issues ever really get solved. If the world needs anything, it needs more thinkers.
