Many consider Abraham Lincoln to be America’s greatest president. It’s easy to understand why: he had the most unenviable task of preserving our country through four years of a bloody civil war. And, while he succeeded, he never lived to enjoy the reunification of North and South. Four days after General Lee signed the surrender at Appomattox Court House Lincoln was assassinated by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. The conspiracy theories surrounding his death were — and still are — plentiful. We do know there was a conspiracy, because Secretary of State William Seward was attacked at his home at approximately the same time. There were plans to assassinate Vice President Andrew Johnson, but the man in charge of attacking him got drunk and forgot about his plan. (Yes, that sounds hilarious, but it’s the truth.) Lincoln managed to live overnight after being shot in the back of the head, dying the next morning at approximately 6:30 AM. His remains were returned to Illinois, where he lived the majority of his life, for burial. His tomb is a beautiful, respectful monument to the president’s life and legacy. It is located at Oak Ridge Cemetery in the capital city of Springfield. The upper left photo is his marker. Surrounding it are the flags of the U.S., Kentucky (where he was born), Indiana (where he lived as a child), Illinois (his “home state”), and the Flag of the President of the United States to the right; and flags of Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Massachusetts (where Lincoln’s ancestors were from) to the left. The other upper photo is the tomb where Lincoln's body was interred originally, from his funeral on May 4, 1865 until the current vault was completed in December 1865. (Lincoln’s Tomb is currently undergoing renovation, so the statues of Lincoln and the soldiers atop the building were covered.) The lower photos are a replica of the statue at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, and Mary Todd Lincoln’s marker. Three of their four children are buried here, with Robert Todd Lincoln interred at Arlington National Cemetery. He was our first assassinated president and the only one (to date) martyred for his service. May that ever remain the case. My paternal grandparents eventually settled in Springfield, as did my grandparents siblings. I have distant family there as well as my oldest son and his family. I have been to Lincoln’s tomb and that cemetery more times than I can count, over the years. Did you go to Lincoln’s home and the museum? They are worth the time for sure.

No, I had to come back for my appointment. Next time I’ll hit the museum. I might do a Lincoln Heritage Trail trip one day.

@FourWalls Have you ever been to New Salem State Park? The little village is really special and in the fall when the leaves change, it’s breathtaking! I hope to go back sometime this fall.

@MarieCoyle — not yet. I love state parks, especially the free ones (they cost in Indiana).

@LindaOHio — except for the headache from dilation and the light shining in the eye, everything was fine. She didn’t see what she saw in May, and that’s all you can ask for.

Its hard to argue with what he did. What ever you believe. I read one presidential book in my life. It was his, Damn that man was impressive, why I never read another. I should read more especially in modern times, but its like who can beat that? How it should work in a way, thats a true teacher and leader.

He was flawed, for certain, but we would be a different nation without him at that time. And I wish the GOP would get back to being “the party of Lincoln” instead of whatever they are today.

I don’t think so, because his spirit wouldn’t let certain politicians enter the White House!

I have been there. Very cool place, and even cooler since I find Lincoln to be one of the greatest presidents this country has ever known.

That was the biggest test of our country. I hope it remains that way.

@FourWalls It really was a defining moment in our history. Imagine what would have happened if we were now The Confederate States of America? The world would be very different I think, and I am not sure in a good way.

He is the much talked about President of the US. We read a great deal about him and all his services from some books. Some leaders become an inspiration for the Globe and he truly was one such leader.
