We went to see my Mum in hospital again today. I took the bag of clean clothes for my Mum that Syd had got ready the day she went in but then forgot, but I added a nightie to it too, and Syd added another couple of pairs of clean pants. When I'd just gone out the door, Syd came back from the car and said, Do you want to take her walking stick? So I went back in and got her walking stick. We went at the same time and parked near where we parked before. When I got out of the car to go to the hospital, Syd said I looked like a right cripple because I had two walking sticks! We went straight in and straight to the lift. We didn't even tell the receptionist why we were there. I don't know wether we should have done that. I rang the bell at the door of the ward, but no-one was coming, so I rang it again! Eventually someone came and opened the door for us and we went in. The nurse asked us who we were there to see, and I said Jillian Elton. The nurse showed us into the ward again where Mum was in the same bed. My Mum was asleep when we got in, but then when the nurse said she was awake a minute ago she opened her eyes. I put the bag on her bed and said, I've got you a present, and then I handed her walking stick. The nurse got us some chairs and we sat down. Mum said she had been feeling sick and she had one of those cardboard bowls infront of her to be sick in. (Actually, they look like papier mache). But she hadn't actually been sick. She had a little bit of lemon and lime cordial in her water. The lady in the next bed, Margaret, was always talking. I don't know what she was talking about half the time, but I think she thought we were there to see her and not my Mum. At one point she managed to spill her drink on the bed and she pressed her alarm for someone to come and clean it up. It took a long time for a nurse to come, but when she did she went and got some clean bed sheets for Margaret. There was another lady in the fourth bed today. My Mum said she wouldn't behave herself! When we first got there someone had taken her off for a walk with the walker. When she came back she went to her bed. But at one point she got up and came over to Margaret who was in the bed next to my Mum and was trying to help her with her water, but Mum told her she shouldn't be over here, and the nurses would help her with that. The other ladies name was Patricia. At one point my Mum wanted the toilet, and she really didn't want to wet herself again so she pressed her alarm. Again, it took ages for a nurse to come. My Mum said, Hurry up or it'll be too late. Eventually a nurse came and helped Mum into the toilet with the walker. When Mum came back she asked us if we had any news, to which we said no. Margaret, who was in the bed next to my Mum, had given my Mum some sweets and she gave me and Syd one each. She said she was feeling a bit better now. Me and my Mum said we'd like to go on a trip out sometime when she gets back. But Syd said he didn't want to come with us. He says he doesn't like coaches. We had another nice chat with my Mum. There were some long silences inbetween. But Mum said it's not the talking that's important, it's the fact that we were there. Margaret in the bed next to my Mum had a visit from her son who was called Steven. Then she said she wanted the toilet, so she pressed her alarm again. She's not as mobile as my Mum, so the nurse pulled the curtain round her bed, and then said she was going to get the commode. When the nurse was gone, Margaret said, I think I've changed my mind! I burst out laughing, I couldn't help myself! My Mum said, What are you laughing at? and I said, She said, I think I've changed my mind! I couldn't stop laughing! Anyway, at about 4:00pm, we left to come home. We went down in the lift again and walked back to the car. As soon as I got home I went to the toilet because I was bursting! What have you lot been getting up to today? I hope you are well. Have a great night.

@sharonelton It’s so hard being in hospital, and visiting people in hospital can be difficult too. Hopefully your mum will get home soon. We spent the day just meandering around Paris quite aimlessly - that’s our favourite thing to do. And we ate a lot I had Magret du Canard at lunch.

@sharonelton I was only in A&E for a day once with a kidney stone that resolved itself before they got me admitted. I’m sure you must have heard me roaring in agony.

No, you're right. I don't like hospitals! The only time I was in one myself (as a patient) was when I was born! I hope my Mum is home soon too. That sounds like a fun thing to do.

That was a funny moment to hear from a patient. I might burst into laugher at that very moment, too.

@sharonelton I had also experienced so many funny situations when still working in the hospital as a physiotherapist. It made me not feel exhausted for having such laughing sessions with the patients and even with the other staff of the facility.

Yes, it was hilarious! The nurse did come back with the commode though, and she did go. That was just as we were getting up to leave.

I thought nightie was a local word! My ignorance! Hope your mom recovers soon! It seems Margaret is chirpier and chattier and must be the popular one there!

A nightie is a dress you wear to go to bed in. Short for night dress! I hope my Mum recovers soon too. Margaret is chirpier and chattier, but I doubt if she's popular for it! I can imagine her getting on people's nerves! Like, Why don't you shut up!

@sharonelton I am wearing a nightie now and wear it when I have no plans to go out! So Margaret is a drama queen!!

@sharonelton I hope it stays that way. It's hard when parents get sick.

I have never had to share a room when I’ve been hospitalized, and seeing as what your mom puts up with regarding the other women, I’m thankful for that.

That's good then. The only time my Mum was in a private room in the hospital was when she first went into hospital after having the brain aneurysm.

Your Mum is right about it doesn't matter if you don't talk all the time. Just being there is important. Nurses can take a very long time to answer those bells. I guess they get really busy.

Yes, it's being there that counts. Sometimes we run out of things to talk about! The nurse came past at one point and said, You lot are quiet! Yes, they can. And I've heard the NHS is understaffed!

I recall my mum when she was in the hospital - ICU for five days and another couple in the private ward. The nurses have a tough time with some people which affects their health. I recall one who was bubbly and said it was all part of their job. I hope your mum is back home and your trip with her will be soon.

Yeah. I don't really like hospital visits! They had a tough time with Patricia! She wouldn't stay put! It was a nice little Asian nurse who helped my Mum to the toilet. Thank you very much. I hope so too.
