Remembering poems.

Today, while I was soaking some garments before placing them inside the washing machine, I started to remember old poems. In my house, when I was a child, all my father´s friends were philosophers, actors and poets. I specially liked Nicanor Parra who became later a reknowned poet. And he read his poems and I learned them by heart. I hadn´t seen one of them for many years in any of his books. I didn´t even know if he had published it. Today, thanks to the web, I came across it and applauded myself for not having forgotten any part of it. I will later go to the second floor where I have a copy of a limited edition of one of his books. The pictures are by Nemesio Antúnez who became later a National Prize in Arts here. But the most important part of it is the part where he dedicates the book to me (I was around 12 or 13 years old) adding "from your admirer". Those things can be very important to a child. And those old flames stay alive in our memory.

It was. Now that I´m old I realise how lucky I was to go to the theather for the first time to watch a play from Shakespeare and not a Pus sy with boots play.

That would be a very special book indeed. My mother loved poetry and knew many of her school poems off my heart, even when she was in her 90s.

My memory is weird nowadays. I remember all the old songs and poems (even some I learned when I was 3 years old) but keep forgetting where I put my ball point pen that I had in my hand.

@marguicha Join the club! All us oldies are like that. Vince couldn't find his watch and it was in his pocket. He never puts it in his pocket.

It's nice that you have a copy of his work. It must have been very interesting to have such interesting types in your home. My grandmother used to recite long parits of the 1855 poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow entitled "The Song of Hiawatha". It is a long poem and is a love story of a Native American and his love interest.

When I was a child is was part of our education and fun to learn poems. There was no TV in our country then and people read a lot more and learned poems and songs. I not only know lots of poems and songs in Spanish, my native language, but I learned a lot of them in English in the year and a half I was in the US when I was around 12 years old. I probably know more Christmas carols in English than any of the children of this generation.

@marguicha .......It is good to work on the memory to remember a poem. I remember learning "This Land is Your Land" in Spanish.

Those gettogethers were more important to me than what I learned at school.

It's amazing how poetry and personal connections can stay with us over the years. It must be wonderful to revisit those old poems and the special dedication in your book.

Wow, that’s such a touching memory! It’s amazing how certain experiences and people from our past can leave such a lasting impact. Nicanor Parra’s poetry must have had a special place in your heart to stay with you all these years. It’s really beautiful that you have that personal connection to his work and that limited edition book with a dedication from him.
