Black cats sure get a bad rap on Friday the 13th. This date has inspired movies, books, and much folklore. In Western cultures, black cats are often thought of as bad luck. It comes from their association with the supernatural and witches. Poor cats. Our cat, Finn, is a beautiful black lounger. His sleek black coat really is something to see and he has an abnormally long body. He has a very nice temperament which I fully appreciate. He is loving and calm. In Japan, the black cat is a symbol of prosperity. Now there are some smart folk. This belief goes back to the Edo period which was from 1603 to 1868. The black cats were thought to ward off evil spirits and to bring good fortune. They are commonly featured in art, literature, and even cat-theme cafes. They are celebrated for their more positive attributes and charming personalities. Picture is from Temu.com

See how we all human beings are subjective. And blame the poor animals. We use a certain symbol or a certain mentality as per our own convenience. The western world sees the black cats as someone who would bring them bad luck. But there is entirely the opposite in Japan. They feel the same kind of animal will bring them prosperity. On one hand the black cat is seen to be evil. On the other hand, someone sees them to ward off evil spirits. Whatever it is, it is our own perspective how to see things. Those poor animals don't even know how they are seen by us.

I think the old movies are the reason.

Growing up, I had two black cats. And those cats turned out to be the most loving cats I'd ever had. One of them I had to leave behind when I moved and the other, George and I had to rehome. While he was loving, he didn't get along with our female cats at the time. He kept spraying outside the litter box and competed for George's lap. We were recieving housing at the time so made the painful decision to rehome him, because we didn't want to lose the apartment over a cat. If we got a black cat again, we decided it'd have to be part of a bonded pair. This would reduce and almost elemate the taritory issue completely.

We all have to make those decisions in life. Sad as they may be.

I had the most beautiful long-haired black cat for 15 years. She was the sweetest cat.
